LOWELL HEIDE Obituary

LOWELL HEIDE Lowell George Heide, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and coach, passed away surrounded by the love of his family. A memorial service will be held on Sunday December 14 at 4 p.m. at Liberty Street Community of Christ Church in Independence, 416 North Liberty, Independence, Mo. His life was defined by kindness, service, and an unwavering commitment to the people and communities he cherished. He was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Marian Heide. He is survived by his sister, Marcia Bloore (Don); his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Debra; his daughter, Lisa Esch (Chris); his son, Matthew Heide (Julie); his six grandchildren, Andie, Mitchell, Emmie, Griffin, Marin, and Kira; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Born and raised in Maquoketa, Iowa, Lowell developed a love of learning and a deep appreciation for small-town values that would shape the rest of his life. He attended Clinton Junior College and later Graceland College, where he met his wife-to-be, Deb, as he prepared for a career that would impact generations of students. Lowell moved to Independence to begin his 49-year career teaching mathematics - first at William Chrisman Junior High and later at William Chrisman High School, where he spent years inspiring young minds. Even after retiring from full-time teaching, he continued to share his gift for education by teaching part-time in Independence, Kansas City, and at Metropolitan Community College. His calm presence, patience, and humor made him a favorite among students and colleagues alike. Throughout his career, Lowell devoted countless hours to coaching baseball, track and field, cross country, and basketball. He kept score at Independence area wrestling tournaments for over 40 years and served a lengthy tenure as the official statistician for the William Chrisman Bears football team. Everyone who knew Lowell knew his great love for the game of baseball. He spent his free time attending Royals games as a years-long ticket holder, visiting various minor league parks across the Midwest or traveling the country with Deb on a Jay Buckley Baseball Tour. He felt most at home in the bleachers with a scorecard in hand. Besides baseball, he had many other interests, including oldies music, '50s and '60s era TV shows, and anything to do with the Iowa Hawkeyes. Above all else, Lowell's greatest joy was his family, starting with Deb, the partner with whom he built a lifetime of devotion and joy. Whether it was trips to Sam's Club, his job as her unofficial taste tester, Jeopardy every day at 4 p.m. or crossword puzzles in the living room, you could be sure to find the two of them enjoying time together. Later in life, nothing made him happier than supporting his grandchildren. To them, he was Papa, and no man ever relished the role of grandfather more. He rarely missed a game, meet, performance, or event, always cheering proudly from the stands. Every grandchild knew they had an open invitation to grab a book and curl up on Papa's lap for a story. Or ask him to sing while he would "shake" their chocolate milk. Those who knew Lowell will remember him as kind, gentle, witty, and dependablea man who gave generously of himself and lived each day with humility and grace. Lowell's legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the students he encouraged, the athletes he coached, and most importantly, the family he adored. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Lowell was a friend and teacher for twenty-five years at Chrisman Junior High
School and then at Chrisman High School. He helped me in my baseball coaching efforts and then became the head baseball coach at Chrisman. He was always interested in helping in a number of other athletic events.

Most of all, Lowell was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a devoted member of his church and follower of Christ. He will be missed. I am afraid there are fewer of his kind left in this day and age. Continue your journey in heaven, dear friend.

Mr. Heide was my baseball coach at William Chrisman. I graduated in 1987 and he was always the coach I remembered later in life as I looked back through my baseball career in high school and college. He loved his students, players and all of us players that were coached by him knew he was there for us as teenage kids that at times needed to be to be reminded that we didn´t know everything!

I am a better person because of coach Heide and am so sad to hear of his passing.
