Max grew up in Higginsville during the difficult years following the Great Depression. With limited opportunities and no means to attend college, he enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, proudly serving as a paratrooper for two years. His service made him eligible for the GI Bill, which enabled him to attend the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo., where he earned a B.A. in accounting.
Following college, Max began a long and successful career with Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), working and traveling extensively as a bank examiner for 33 years. He eventually settled in Springfield, Mo., where he spent the final 20 years of his career before retiring in 1991.
In retirement, Max enjoyed the simple pleasures of life: boating and fishing at his summer home on Table Rock Lake, winter trips to Florida, and time with family. He enjoyed traveling, golf, tennis, and camping. He was poor at golf, fishing and tennis, but enjoyed it as much as anyone.
Following cremation, Max will be laid to rest at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield beside his first wife, Lois Jane Hoefer.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church located at 17200 E 39th St. S., Independence, MO 64055. Visitation with family and friends will precede the service beginning at 10 a.m.
