null Bernard Obituary

Madeline Clinton Bernard

April 14, 1925 - June 14, 2025

Madeline Clinton Bernard, also known as Maddy, Tia and Grammy, passed away on June 14th. She celebrated an amazing 100 years plus two months before departing this Earth to join loved ones who passed before her. Maddy was born April 14th, 1925 to Pauline Davis Clinton and Winfield Alberto Clinton. She spent her youth in Clifton, Virginia. At 17, like so many other new graduates, Maddy was recruited by the US Government to enter the federal workforce during World War II. Her artistic abilities matched her with a position at the Army Map Service. There she met a returning disabled veteran named Joseph Alfred (Al, Joe) Bernard, who would become her spouse and lifelong companion. They lived the majority of their years together in McLean, Virginia. After raising three children, Maddy returned to federal service with the David Taylor Model Basin, Naval Research and Development. Retirement years were spent in Saint Michaels, Maryland, then Gainesville, Virginia. Maddy was known for her kind spirit, keen wit and creative talents. She was also likely to be the victor of any card or board game played with her. When recently asked which segment of her life she would like to replay, she responded it would have to be when she was the one helping others. Maddy was predeceased by her parents, Winfield Alberto Clinton and Pauline Davis Clinton, her husband, Joseph Alfred Bernard, her sister, Mildred Clinton Lien, and her son, Bruce Albert Bernard. She is survived by her son, Paul Bernard, her daughter, Barbara Bernard, her nephew, Philip Lien (Jean), her nieces, Linda Van Loan and Marlene Torrey, her grandchildren, Christopher Bernard (Michelle), Linsay Bernard and Dylan Bernard, and her great-grandson, Maverick Bernard. We are grateful for Maddy's caregiver, Esther Ajao, OneMoreMiles, who kept her heathy and happily engaged in assembling many jigsaw puzzles.

There was a service honoring Maddy on June 28th, at Moser Funeral Home (233 Broadview Avenue, Warrenton, Virginia) at 10:00, with viewing at 9:30. Her internment followed at the City of Fairfax Cemetery.
