Aubrey Smith Obituary

Aubrey Allen Smith

February 7, 1938 - September 9, 2025

Aubrey Allen Smith passed away peacefully on September 9, 2025 at 87 years of age.

Son of the late Ashby and Marguerite (Sinclair) Smith, Aubrey was born February 7, 1938 in the Plains, Virginia. He grew up in Fairfax, Virginia graduating from Fairfax High School and from Emory and Henry College. Aubrey married Rose LaHaie on June 17, 1964. Together they raised two children in Broad Run Virginia.

Aubrey taught English at Oakton High School for over 30 years and received a master's degree in education early in his career from Virginia Tech. Throughout his life, Aubrey dedicated himself to helping those in need. He volunteered at correctional facilities teaching reading and literacy. Aubrey and Rose opened their home through the Children's Friendship Project for Northern Ireland hosting Protestant and Catholic kids over the summer, and they took in children as a resource family for the Fauquier Foster Care program. After retiring from teaching, Aubrey began a volunteer food collection and distribution service for those in need through the Warrenton United Methodist Church. His efforts helped form the Fauquier County Food Distribution Coalition in 2002. He organized and ran food collections up until a few years ago when he moved into White Springs Senior Living in Warrenton, VA.

Aubrey enjoyed hunting, fishing, metal-detecting for Civil War relics, reading, and working on his small farm in Broad Run. The barn he built by hand in the late 70's remains today in the front field. Most of all, Aubrey loved being surrounded by friends and family. He was happiest playing cards and games, spending time with his children and grandchildren, and vacationing at the beach in Kitty Hawk, NC. He taught us all to work hard, be nice to others, and enjoy life.

Surviving Aubrey are his children: Elizabeth Healey (Joe) and Sinclair Smith (Tara); grandchildren: Meghan (Andrew), Justin, Quinn, Liam, and Daniel; brother: Don Smith; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Rose.

Visitation with the family will be Friday Sept 19th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Warrenton United Methodist Church, 341 Church St, Warrenton, VA 20186. Funeral service will be Saturday Sept 20th at 2:00 pm followed by a reception, both at Warrenton United Methodist Church.
