After retirement, he worked for the SPCA in Casanova. He was an animal lover and rescue pet owner from a young age.
Joe was a fan of antique cars and was very passionate about his Chevy vehicles. He owned a 1972 Chevy Caprice convertible, 1954 2 door Chevy Bel Air sedan, and 1955 5 window first series Chevy pickup truck. He won several awards for his vehicles with the help of his best friend Tom Aubrey who restored his pickup to original condition. He won awards for his cars as he traveled to compete and judge at AACA car shows. He was most proud of crisscrossing the US to attend every show twice, and won a Grand National trophy for that feat. His cars also won many of those car shows.
He was a dear husband, father, brother, grandfather (Pee Paw), friend, and will be greatly missed. He is preceded in death by his brother Colen White Jr and his parents Colen Sr. and Villa White. In addition to his wife, Margaret, he is survived by his son Michael (Melissa) White of Virginia Beach, daughter Kristin (Bruce) Maynard of Warrenton, three grandchildren (Miranda White, Malcolm White, and Evelyn Maynard), sister Erma (Dennis) Hanks of Palm Desert, California, and many nieces and nephews who are scattered across the continent from Canada to California to Arkansas, Michigan, Ohio and Alaska.
The family would like to thank the loving staff at Heartland Hospice for the special care over the past few months especially Nurse Cassie, Lorraina, and Debbie.
A private burial will be held at Culpeper National Cemetery. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Warrenton on Friday, October 24 at 12:30PM. A luncheon will be provided after the service for family and friends.
