John Monk Obituary

NEWTON GROVE - John Paul Monk, 86, of Newton Grove, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, in Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Newton Grove, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Monk was born in Sampson County to the late W.J. Monk and the late Madge Darden Monk. As an Army soldier, he served in the Occupation of Germany in World Wwar II. After retiring from FASCO in Fayetteville, Mr. Monk and his wife returned to Newton Grove to live on his childhood farm. Mr. Monk is survived by his beloved wife of more than 59 years, Frances Usher Monk of the home; and a sister, Rose Cilio of Morton Grove, Ill. Additionally he is survived by sisters-in-law, Alma Barclay, Doris Monk and Ellen Monk. He was a role model and father figure to his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by nine siblings, James "Brother," Joe, Phillip, Louise, Mildred, Pat, Elizabeth "Brownie," Alice and Ellen. Mr. Monk was the great-grandson of Archibald Monk, one of the founding fathers of Sampson County. During his retirement years, Mr. Monk spent many loving hours in the preservation and upkeep of the Archibald Monk House in Weeks Park in Newton Grove. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, the Archibald Monk House or Our Lady of Guadalupe Ladies Altar Society.
