Lake City, FL—Taps have sounded. Heaven has gained another angel.
1st Sgt. Lige Walter Folsom went to meet his Lord and Savior, at age 95, on May 25, 2021, after receiving loving care in the Hospice Unit of the VA Medical Center in Lake City, FL.
Lige was born in Berlin, GA on October 5, 1925. He entered military service on December 6, 1944, and after basic training volunteered for airborne service. After earning jump wings, he returned to his family near High Springs, FL and married his 16-year-old sweetheart, Nina Mae DuBose.
Lige departed for France in August 1944 where he joined the 82nd Airborne Division and served with the 504th PIR while in Europe. In December 1946, after serving with the 82nd 'Honor Guard' in Berlin, Lige and Nina were reunited and moved to Ft. Bragg and Fayetteville, NC. They had three children, Sharon Jean, Walter Levon and Richard Keith, all mid 1960s 'Bulldog' graduates of Fayetteville Senior High.
Lige remained with the 82nd until 1965, when he retired. He worked with Power-Swain Chevrolet and later managed cafeterias at Ft. Bragg until 1971, when he purchased and operated Fayetteville Seafood, in the Eutaw Shopping Center, for over 20 years. Lige and Nina later moved to Parkton, NC, into their country dream house, and began travelling in a new motor home, something they had always looked forward to. Nina Mae Folsom passed unexpectedly in May of 2004. Lige remarried in 2005 to Betty DuBose, and has lived comfortably in Ft. White, FL, near many of his loving brothers and sisters, for the past 16 years.
Lige was predeceased in 2002 by two of his grandsons, and in 2009 by his oldest son, Levon. Lige is survived by his daughter, Sharon Stewart of Fayetteville, son, Richard and his wife, Jan, of Washington, NC, and daughter-in-law, Sharon Folsom of Bracey, VA. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and 2 stepchildren in Florida.
A private graveside service will be held at Sandhills Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake, NC, where he will be interred with his first wife, Nina Mae.
