Charles A. Herron, age 80 of Waynetown, died unexpectedly, Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016 in Crawfordsville.
He was born April 24, 1936 to the late Earl "Shorty" and Cora (Coon) Herron and raised in Montgomery County. He married Jo Ann Ingalsbe on Oct. 5, 1957 in the Mellott Christian Church and she survives.
He attended Liberty Chapel as a child growing up and was a graduate of Waynetown High School, graduating in 1954.
Charlie served in the Army from October 1954 to October 1956 stationed and worked at Ellsworth Air Force Base as an anti-aircraft mechanic. He received his honorable discharge at Ft. Carson Colorado. He then worked at Coon Electric in Waynetown, before operating the Shell station with Ed Andrews, followed by Lee Kirkpatrick and then Bill Cowan. Then he became employed with Boots Brothers, where he remained employed for over 50 years.
He served on the Waynetown Volunteer Fire Department for 26 years, and also served as fire chief for several years.
Charles enjoyed the association with the crew members of the French Racing Team. He also enjoyed the many activities of his grandchildren over the years, and enjoyed keeping photos and CDs of their many accomplishments. He also was an avid hunter. Charlie had a great sense of humor, full of spirit and enjoyed bantering with anyone around. He will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jo Ann, two sons: Charles 'Brad' (Amber) Herron of Crawfordsville, Gary Scott Herron, California daughter Brenda (Richard) Miller: Grandchildren Charles David (Kayla Hoehn) Herron, Lauren Kelsea (Cory Faulkner) Simpson, Meredith Taylor (Austin Krutzsch) Simpson and Tiffany Buckles Lohmeyer. In addition, he is survived by siblings - Mary (Norman) Abston, Helen Rutledge, Bill Herron, Jack Herron, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Geremy Buckles, and two sisters, Jane Whipple and Ruby Ralston.
Funeral services were Thursday, August 11, 2016 at the Family and Friends Funeral Home of Wingate. Burial was in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery, with graveside military service by Crawfordsville American Legion/VFW Posts.
