Once upon a time Provost Sorenson made a gracious, thoughtful decision that impacted my life. I was going through some old paperwork and wanted to thank him again [almost 20 years later]. I am sad to see he passed so young but after what looks to have been a very full and incredibly meaningful life. I am thankful for that.

Dear Family and Friends --
Dr. Andrew Sorensen was one of my teachers and my first post-graduate employer at the University of Rochester.
I remember his young son at the age of three finding a Christmas Candy chocolate to be something rather distasteful! Here were parents who watched over their children with such care that excessive sweets were a natural turn-off. It proved to be one of my first experiences of the responsibilities and careful attention to detail required of serious parenting. The rejected treat ended up in Daddy's palm!
Dr. Sorensen was very proud of his Harvard University stint during the first year of my employ at the University. He came back to the U of R with great ideas and multiple contributions to our lecture department series and to the classroom.
I am glad he had such a long and successful career.

Dear Mary Beth, Winifred, and Mark,

I was so shocked to read of Aaron's death in the Joliet Alumni News. What a legacy he left. I personally profited from his expertise when I sought his advice for a presidential search team I was on. Whoever would have thought those days at Gospel Temple would have led us all where we've landed. In my case, that includes a Presbyterian Church USA in Glen Ellyn, IL, next to my home town of Wheaton. I value those memories -- including a wedding I attended 50 years ago, complete with e.e. cummings' "i am through you so I" I also value the times I visited with your mom in Baltimore. Know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Sorensen family:

News of Andrew's passing just got to me, so my apologies for the tardy note. I had the unique honor of having met Andrew as a PhD classmate at Yale, taking a number of courses with him. My enduring memory of Andrew is his sitting in the very back of the class smoking or chewing on a cigar, asking tongue in cheek questions of our professors, especially our statistics professor. I liked him instantly, and have held him in esteem ever since then. I will miss Andrew immensely, especially his out of the blue phone calls that he made to me over all these years. Please accept my most sincere condolences. We are the poorer without him with us.

I use to pick Dr. Sorensen up from the airport, whenever he came to Charleston for a Board of Directors meeting at SC Sea Grant Consortium. His conversation with me was always upbeat and positive! I liked Dr. Sorensen, he was very kind to me. RIP.....you will always be remembered.

I knew him as Aaron. When I last saw him 50 years ago I was a kid at the church where his Dad, Rev. Albert A. Sorenson, was pastor. Aaron's sister Winnie used to babysit for me and my sister. I thought the family might enjoy this photo from September 1960; this was a reception for the Sorensons, who were leaving Faith Bible Church in Joliet, IL, and the Granholms, who were taking their place. Rest in peace, Aaron.

Dear Donna and Family,

Mary and I just became aware of Andrew's sad passing and extend our sincere and profound sympathies. We've not seen you in many years, but treasure the memories of time together -- my days with Andrew at Ann Arbor; the privilege of attending your Fitchburg wedding; Andrew's role in marrying us in a small Rhode Island church by the sea. Your first born and ours sharing a swan boat ride in Boston's Public Garden as toddlers. Visits to you at various duty stations, e.g. Middletown, Brookline, Ithaca, Amherst. Andrew was a truly beautiful person, his incredibly constructive life filled with love, kindness and humor. We are fortunate to have shared time and space on this planet with you both. We wish you peace.

Donna,

Andrew was special to me. We worked well together and traveled to Europe as well as around the US to present papers on Distance Education. We spent a lot of time in travels and many experiences -- some of them humorous and some of them stressful. I will remember him always.

One thing for sure, he loved his family and always had stories to share with me as we traveled together. Please know that Alex and I are thinking about you and the boys on this sad occasion.

Donna...please accept our heartfelt sympathy on the loss of sweet Andy. We spent Easter with the McCollough family and we were all smiles telling Andy stories from your time at UF. Craig was so proud to be a mentor/advisor to your son Aaron at the Business School at UF and we loved the pride you two had for Aaron and his accomplishments. You could feel the love and joy for Aaron at his graduation party and it was a wonderful celebration. The world will be a less joyous place without his warm smile and we will truly miss him.

April 26, 2011

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Mrs. Sorensen and family. I met President Sorensen while working at the University of South Carolina in the African American Studies Program, as program coordinator. President Sorensen was very instrumential in the success of that program. He valuled the program and was a good friend to our program Director now President of Vorhees College Dr. Cleveland Sellers. Dr. Sorensen worked hand-in-hand with Dr. Sellers in making the African American Studies Program one of the best programs at the University. I really respected and appreciated the cohesiveness that President brought to USC, the community and the State. During my tenue at the University for 31 years I worked under 6 presidents but I have not met a president as personable and friendly as President Sorensen. I will always cherish the memory of seeing his friendly smiles, handshakes and very stylish bowties. Carolyn Sutton, University of South Carolina, Columbia South Carolina.

My condolences to you Mrs.Sorensen and your family. I have many fond memories of Dr.Sorensen that I will cherish. He genuinely was a kind person and cared deeply for people. I enjoyed being part of the Food Service team that served at The Presidents House at the University of South Carolina. It was also an honor being his Presidential Executive Chef for those years at USC.

Donna, Aaron & Ben,

I was sorry to hear about Dr Sorensen's sudden death. I enjoyed getting to know him and his extended family during his tenure at The University of AL. He was a joy to work for and he always kept me busy and "on my toes". I will always remember traveling together to football games, bowl games, and speaking engagements with the family.
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

My sympathies to all of Andy's family and friends. I am sad for your loss but I am also envious of the time you were able to spend with him. We first met when his father A.A. was the minister at our church in Joliet, IL. We became friends and over the next few years we shared some wonderful experiences. I remember his '39 Plymouth which had bad shocks but still managed to haul 8 of us to Romeo Beach. I remember double dating to see Night of the Iguana. I remember taking our dates to Riverview Amusement Park in Chicago. We traveled to Chicago on Sunday nights to attend services at the First Church of Deliverence or "Songs in the Night" followed by a Big Boy and Coke. When I recieved my Viet Nam era induction notice Andy would not let me travel alone on the train to Chicago, but rode and talked with me until my arrival at the induction center. He sent me off with a prayer and his blessing. My wife and I remember his tour as Asst. Pastor in Morris, IL as he was completing his divinity studies. Andy reminded me, when I told him I had been promoted to Warden in the Illinois Department of Corrections, of the times we went to Stateville to sing for the Sunday Protestant services, and told me how pleased his father, who had been Protestant Chaplain there, would be. I remember his comforting letter to my mother when my father died , as well as his disappointment at missing our wedding because he couldn't get back from Scotland to attend. Andy was my friend and, although over the years our contacts were limited, my thoughts of him were frequent. God has smiled upon us in sharing Andy with us. I hope we all appreciate what we shared. God bless you all.

My wife, Susan, and I had the pleasure of getting to know Andrew when I was Chancellor at the University of Illinois. We traveled together to Israel one summer where we got to see first hand his compassion and understanding of the human condition. Nowhere was this more evident than on an emotionally wrenching visit to Yad Vashem. It was the start of an all too brief friendship. Fond memories remain

I haven't seen Aaron in over 50 years but memories are like they happened yesterday. Mom and Dad helped start the Gospel Temple where Aaron's father, Alfred was the pastor. My Christian education has it's foundation in the basement of this church where I attended Sunday school in my formative years which solidified my life long Christianity. My Dad often hosted a church group there called the Derbeans at our farm. The summer picnics and fall Halloween activies were the highlight of my youthfull life. I remember Aaron as having the richest smile and highly confident, positive attitude. I have he same feeling toward Winifred, Mark and Beverly, a wonderful, blessed family and Margaret, my goodness, her learning years going to college never seemed to end. I can also remember when my Dad ran for Will County Treasurer and we went to Rev. Sorensen's home the eve. of the election to listen to the returns, which my Dad won. In any case, I'm blessed to be able to comment on my knowledge of Aaron and express my sorrow at the loss of one of the most impressive people I've ever met.
God Bless,

Dear Donna,
I enjoyed working with you on the fine arts initiative for Columbia when you were at USC. You and your husband did a fine job of steering USC to more solid ground during his tenure here. Andrew wrote to thank me for something very small that I did for him. I will always remember his kindness and his attention to detail. You are in my thoughts daily. I am very sorry for your loss.

Dr. Sorensen was a dedicated educator and inspirational leader. He touched the lives of many at Florida, Alabama and South Carolina, and made a lasting impact on me in terms of what it is to be an ethical and compassionate leader and human being. I miss his light.

Donna, Tom and I were extremely saddened to learn of Dr. Sorensen's passing. I was his Administrative Assistant during the years he was at the University of Florida. He was a very kind and thoughtful man. Tom and I will always be grateful for the time Dr. Sorensen stepped up and arranged for me to have the best surgeons and medical care available during my bout with cancer. I'm sure that Dr. Sorensen touched many others and they feel the same as Tom and I. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

When my son, Dylan Gallagher, was a student at USC, he decided he wanted to meet the president of the university. He went to his house and knocked on his door, and Dr. Sorensen invited him in. They became friends and got together occasionally for coffee over the next couple of years. Dylan also served him at Garibaldi's many times over those two years. When he graduated, he asked Dr. Sorensen to write him a letter of recommendation. He did, and it was the best such letter I've ever read. It nailed Dylan to a T. It was insightful, funny, and filled with great phrases like "appropriately gregarious." (Dylan got the job.) Dr. Sorensen wasn't just a really good educator and university president. He was a really good man. Heaven is a lucky place.

April 20, 2011

I worked with Dr. Sorensen when he chaired the local United Way campaign in Gainesville, FL. I admired him greatly for his compassion for others less fortunate, his ability to get things done, his ethics and moral compass. He only asked of others what he asked of himself, had high standards for excellence, a strong work ethic, was intellectually stimulating and funny at the same time. A remarkable academic and humanitarian who will be missed.

Psalm 28:7-9
"The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song. The LORD is the strength of his people, a fortress of salvation for his anointed one. Save your people and bless your inheritance; be their shepherd and carry them forever."

I can truly remember the bright glamour smile, pleasant sprit, and swift conversation. As I walked to class on the horseshoe, Dr. Sorensen would be making his early morning walk to his office. I will always cherish the photos that my family alone with Dr. Sorensen and his wife took during the class of 2004 Graduate Reception. Even in times like this we can find comfort in the arms of the Lord. My prayers are with the family.

My husband & I had the priveledge of meeting Dr. Sorenson when he came to Gonzaga College High School in Washington DC in October of 2007 to meet the parents of the Gonzaga Alumni from the recent Gonzaga Graduating class (2007). Our son was a freshman at USC at the time of Dr. Sorenson's visit to Gonzaga. 14 young men from Gonzaga went to USC in the Fall of 2007. Dr. Sorenson told us during his visit that he was curious to see Gonzaga & get to know the parents of the 14 boys who chose USC. He was gracious, humorous and shared with us words of wisdom "Your 18 year old son's who have been blessed in eduction under the Gonzaga Jesuit motto "Men for Others" will grow into their own and USC will become a part of their foundation that you will be proud of". How true Dr. Sorenson's words are today. Nick is a senior at USC & will be graduating. We are so proud of the experiences that USC has afforded Nick. Dr. Sorenson was a true "Man for Others" . RIP. Mrs. Sorensen and Family,
This is amazing. My husband just passed away on 4/11. I have asked family and friends to sign our guest book. I grew up with Aaron's sister Winney. I visited their home often through our school years and always had a place in my heart for Aaron. I knew he would have a wonderful future and reading about him convinced me of that. My prayers are with you all at this time. I would love to get in touch with Winnifred. Sincerely, Gwendolyn Johnson Sidebottom Ft. Myers, FL

I was fortunate enough to chat with him during several occasions, including one time in the airport as we were heading to two different destinations. Dr. Sorensen was a great man who contributed his great ideas to the University of South Carolina. I remember my first week at Carolina and running into him. As I walked across the bridge to Gambrell Hall, the strap on my backpack snapped and fell off my shoulder. He came to me, helped me fix my backpack and asked my name and where I was from. We spoke of why I did not choose to attend Clemson and why I chose journalism as a major. He wished me luck at Carolina and hurried off to a Board meeting on the Horseshoe.

Four years and a half years later, he shook my hand as I walked across the stage at the Colonial Center (as it was called back then). As he shook my hand, he asked me if I ever got the strap on my backpack fixed and smiled at me. He was truly a great man that left a great legacy at a great university. May you rest in peace, Dr. Sorensen and I am proud to say that I attended Carolina during your tenure as president. God bless Mrs. Sorensen, his children, and grandchildren.

I worked with him on the OSU Foundation Board> He was a person of great class and dignity but also with the common touch. Thank you for sharing him with the Buckeye Nation. We will miss him enormously but are comforted that he will be cheering us on from Heaven. Marty Murrer

Dr. Sorensen was a great man. He was president while I attended the University of Alabama. As vice president of the Pan-Hellenic council, I served on different committees started by Dr. Sorensen for the betterment of Greek-life at the Capstone. He was a great guy to work with and his works and energy will truly be missed by all.

God Bless and Roll Tide!

This is just ineffably sad! Dr. Sorenson was a very dynamic figure. As one who participated in musical performance, he was also very supportive of USC'S School of Music. As a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of the School of Music, I certainly appreciated his support and appreciation, even though I retired the year he came (but still continue to do the National Anthem at Athletic events) My heartfelt sympathies go to his family.

A mentor and friend, Dr. Sorensen possessed a passionate curiosity that spurred many innovations and built much-needed bridges in our University community. He worked across lines of race, between the school and city, with the state's other public institutions of higher education and, above all, always, always among the students. He had a profound impact on my life and left an indelible legacy in our state. He will be remembered with affection and missed.

There are many broken hearts at Ohio State today. I didn't know Dr Sorensen too well, but what I did know is that he was a wonderful, kind, caring person. I wish I could have had more time to get to know him better.
He and his family are in my thoughts and prayers.
God Bless you all.

I'm so proud to have been a student under his tenure. What always stood out to me was his friendliness and ability to connect with the students. There were several times when I would see him walking around campus with a smile on his face and saying "Hello" to anyone in his path. His contributions to the University, and personally, to my experience at Carolina will never be diminished. Sincere condolences to his family and friends. Lindsey Jefferson, Class of 2007

To the Sorensen Family: Dr. Andrew Sorensen was THE BEST of THE BEST the Univ of SC aka Carolina Gamecocks has ever had for President!!! While I served on the Black Alumni Council (2000-2005), there wasn't anything Dr. Sorensen wouldn't do for us to ensure that our projects were carried out in an efficient and effective manner. He was always in touch with the students & alumni, especially during Homecoming season, having fun with everyone else. I also remembered when he spoke at my church, Brookland Baptist Church in West Columbia SC years ago and we were blessed to have him, and looked forward to his return. Dr. Sorensen's life was a true example of a Man of God who had a love for people, especially the students & alumni of the Univ of SC. He will always be loved and truly miss. May the beautiful memories of DR. ANDREW SORENSEN bring you love, peace, joy, happiness, comfort & strength now and forever. God bless you ... RIP DR. ANDREW SORENSEN!!! :^)

Dr. Sorensen was a wonderfully compassionate man who never quite seemed to grasp why some people were petty or mean, especially toward those less fortunate. His was a life lived with passion and enthusiasm. And even his most public works seemed to flow from a deep faith in the Divine, a personal bearing that told him there was a larger, unknowable power loving and moving each of us. Godspeed.

I remember Dr. Sorensen being very engaged with the students. He was always available in the GMP during the busiest times of the day. I never forget the day I was going to have lunch with my girlfriend at the time. Out of the blue, he started to talk to us. "Make sure you take care of her" was his parting words that day. Very sad day for Gamecock Nation. You can not replace a man like that. Love you Dr. Sorensen. You will be missed. Prayers sent to the Sorensen Family.

When Dr. Sorenson was at the helm, things did not feel like the typical South Carolina. He had vision and imagination that is unusual around here. He wanted us to be extraordinary, and he made the state, and the university, a much better place. Our thoughts are with you.
