The Demers Family

I was shocked and saddened to to hear of Dave's passing. He was a very active member of the fire protection industry and he will be missed. Although, in a ways we were competitors there is no competition between friends, we will all miss him.

Our family rented the Demer's upstairs apartment when I was in first grade at the Passios; I recall feeling I had 4 older brothers. Dave would babysit for my parents, and show off his stamp collection to keep us occupied. Much later, I had opportunities to speak with Dave regarding fire protection issues while assigned to Boston Fire Department headquarters; what a genuinely nice guy. Thoughts and prayers to a wonderful family.

I was neighbors with the wonderful Demers family. We played together and skated on the pond across from his house. I had the honor of being the kids' babysitter. Not only were they completely well-behaved and delightful, the pay was $1 per hour - top dollar in those days. There was a fire near their yard when David was in grade school, which sparked his interest in his future career. And he had a phenomenal talent for it. I recently found a story I had written about the neighborhood fire and shared it with him, and every time I saw him, we'd have a chuckle about it. He gave so much back to the community through his Scouting and his fire knowledge. Thank you, Dave, you will be sorely missed.

Katy Krieger talked David into trying out for the 1969 Competitive Play "A Thousand Clowns" that I was directing. It was not David's nature to be a performer, but he reluctantly tried out for the lead part. He ended up winning Best Actor for an amazing performance. Not only was he funny, but his song and dance routine was fantastic.
When he graduated, he wrote in my yearbook that he learned more about himself by appearing in that show, than from all the "technical stuff" he'd been studying.
When Norm Gallagher announced his acting award, he referred to David as "Lunenburg's own Zero Mostel".
Sleep well, my friend. I hope you meet Katy somewhere out there.

To the Demers Family: When I firt went to work for NFPA 33 years ago, Dave was the among the people I worked for. We hit it off right away and argued and laughed like an old married couple. We've stayed friends for all these years and had a great business relationship, however, more importantly, Dave was always there for me through thick and thin and he was a trusted friend. I will really miss him!

Sons and Brothers,

I knew Dave as a firefighter, an engineer and a friend. For many years, I had the privilege of working side-by-side with him. When he was focused on the game, there was no one better at getting the job done. Lorraine and I also had the opportunity to spend quality downtime with him, as we traveled the country attending meetings and conferences. Most importantly, we will always cherish the memories of the peaceful moments spent with Dave and the family on the back porch at Ocean Point.

May he rest in peace.

I am shocked and saddened to hear the news of your father's passing this morning. David was a good friend and pretty much a mentor during my time in Leominster Fire. I suppose you do not remember, Devin, the time we all went together to the train show in Springfield when you were younger; your father also participated in my son's Eagle Scout ceremony. Sadly we had not seen each other much of late. My very deepest sympathy to you boys and your family.

To the Demers Family,

I had the great pleasure and good fortune to be Dave's staff liaison for an NFPA TC for over six years. We lead parallel lives as I was a chief building official in 5 MAssachusetts communities over a 30 year career. We had a great deal in common and shared many great times both in and out of meetings on the road. Dave was one of those rare individuals who was not only extremely competent technically, but who had a tremendous moral compass and strong people skills. I will miss him very much, but I will never forget him and how much he enriched my life. May God comfort you in your loss of Dave!

Devin and Dierk,
I find it a striking coincedence that traveling on business I am about 90 miles from Philmont as I read this. The picture of your Dad brings me back to the year 2000 when after all our planning, we finally made it there. Those are wonderful memories that I'm sure will bring you joy and peace as the years pass. I'm sorry for your loss.
