Donald Smith Obituary

Donald Gregory 'Greg' Smith
Loving husband, father, son, and brother; 54

LEOMINSTER -- Donald Gregory (Greg) Smith, 54, of Leominster, MA, died on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Franklin, NH on November 14, 1959 to Judith and Donald Smith. Greg was a graduate of Burlington High School and received a Bachelor's Degree from Bentley College in 1982.

Greg was a caring and loving father and delighted in attending his daughter, Emma's piano and dance recitals. He cherished time with his family and never missed one of the many Smith family summer vacation gatherings on Cape Cod or in Maine.

Always available to lend a helping hand, Greg was kind, hard working and a supportive friend with a big network of loyal buddies that would do anything for him.

An avid fan of the Red Sox, Patriots and Bruins, he also loved skiing and was his local golf league's champion and known for hitting the ball a mile!

Greg was a local builder of beautiful custom homes, where he developed an enviable reputation for the quality of his craftsmanship and careful attention to every detail. His clients loved him for the work he did and treated him like family. Greg also expressed his creativity through art, including photography and stained glass.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Beltzer-Smith and daughter, Emma Smith; his parents, Judith and Donald Smith of Burlington, MA; sister, Pamela and husband, Paul Grandmaison of Walpole, NH; sister, Audrey and husband, Dwight Barnes of Deerfield, NH; brother, Geoffrey Smith and wife, Karen of Gaithersburg, MD; and brother, Brian Smith and wife, Sheila of Westford, MA. He also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.

Greg will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends and will forever be in our hearts.

SMITH -- A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 11:00 am at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 60 West St., Leominster, MA. Perhaps not fully knowing the lives he touched, the quiet reassurance he conveyed or the full spectrum of his life's achievements, such things were not lost on others. As our friend and neighbor, we came to appreciate the unassuming man next door who put so much thought and artistry into the home he built and maintained for his family, the sense of responsibility and genuine caring he innately felt for those of us connected to him in some way and the joy he shared when it was “goal to go” or “bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth”. He savored the nuances of the game, valued the skill it took to play and win professionally. Greg was a contender in his own right and on so many levels.

Our Leominster home stands atop Sheldon Hill as testament to his prowess and achievement as a builder and leader; a monument of sorts to a man who embodied quality, advanced fine craftsmanship and built beautiful structures made to stand the test of time. His kind spirit and exacting ways remain with us, uniquely set in the foundation he poured, the walls he constructed and the design he so carefully translated into the home we live in today.

We drew comfort seeing the light on in his garage office as he worked late into the night studying a blueprint or preparing a proposal. We feel a profound sadness knowing that light has now been extinguished, but celebrate the life he led, the relationships he forged and the legacy he left behind.
