Edward Kapenas Obituary

Edward J. Kapenas of Townsend, Groton school dept. retiree; 68 TOWNSEND Edward J. Kapenas, 68, of Townsend, died unexpectedly Tuesday, October 7, 2008, at his home. Mr. Kapenas was born in Lowell, August 19, 1940, a son of John and Nora (Callahan) Kapenas, and has resided in Townsend for over 30 years. He grew up in Groton, and was a 1958 graduate of Groton High School. Before retiring in 2005, Mr. Kapenas worked 45 years in the maintainence department at Groton Elementary School where the students affectionately knew him as "Mr. Eddie". For many years, he also held a part-time maintainence position at the Groton Post Office. He enjoyed music, and and was an automobile enthusiast. He is survived by a son, James E. Kapenas of Lunenburg; five daughters, Cheryl A. and her husband, Walter DeLeo of Townsend, Charlene Banagis of Ohio, June M. and her husband, Tom Fitzgerald of California, Jennifer A. Kapenas of Sutton, Melissa A. Kapenas and her significant other, Dean LeBlanc of Ashby; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Gerry Kapenas of Ashburnham, Richard and Sharon Kapenas of Townsend; two sisters, Mary Marshall of Ayer, and Barbara Nowlan of California. He also leaves nine grandchildren; as well as his former wife, Carolyn E. Riggs of Amherst, NH. KAPENAS Calling hours are 5-8 p.m., Friday, October 10th at the T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 250 Main Street, (Rte. 119) Townsend Center. Private burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Lowell. Memorial contributions in Mr. Kapenas' name may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.

My sincere condolences to all of Eddie's family. I am so sorry for your loss. I worked with Eddie for 31 years in the Groton School System. We all felt a deep affection for him and appreciated his dedication, humor, and friendship. He will be fondly remembered.
