CONCORD -- Esther Whittier (Mateer) Rickheit, 96, of Deaconess Rivercrest, died Saturday, June 26, at Rivercrest.
She was born in Boston on June 5, 1908, the daughter of William and Ella (Whittier) Mateer and lived in Leominster many years before moving to East Sandwich, Magnolia and Concord.
She received a bachelor’s degree in 1932 from Boston University and she received a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Simmons College in 1935.
Mrs. Rickheit was a descendent of the poet John Greenleaf Whittier. She was a librarian at the Leominster Public Library and in Sandwich for the school system.
She enjoyed volunteer work and volunteered until the age of 90 at a private library in Magnolia. She also enjoyed walking, reading and travel.
She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Leominster.
Mrs. Rickheit leaves two sons, Alan W. Rickheit of Ashburnham and Peter M. Rickheit and his wife Meredith (Conroy) Rickheit of Leominster; and six grandsons, George Rickheit of Fitchburg, Kurt Rickheit of Worcester, Erich Rickheit of Derry, N.H., Hans Rickheit of Cambridge, Jeffrey Rickheit of Fitchburg and John Rickheit of Worcester. She also leaves a great-grandson, Shawn Rickheit of Fitchburg, and a step-granddaughter, Sheryl Sousa of Waltham. Her husband, George Edward Rickheit, predeceased her in 1979. A daughter-in-law, Josephine (DellAquila) Rickheit, died in 1991.
RICKHEIT -- On June 26, Esther W. (Mateer) Rickheit, 96, of Concord. The memorial service will be held at Duval Chapel at Deaconess -- Rivercrest, 80 Deaconess Road (behind Emerson Hospital) Concord, on Wednesday, June 30, at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Alzheimer’s Disease Research, 22512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg, MD 20871.
