John Whitman Obituary

formerly of Townsend

John S. Whitman, formerly of Townsend, passed away peacefully after a brief illnes, in Maine on October 4, 2023

He is survived by a sister Joyce Heon of Lunenburg, six childern, Carole(Whitney) and Robert Whitman, of Jackson., ME, Kathy Whitman of Groton, Steven and James Whitman of Lunenburg, and Susan Whitman of Leominster, as well as two grandsons, Sam of Jackson, ME., and Frank of Groton.

He was born in Fitchburg, MA on April 26, 1927, the son of John and Selma (Lehto) Whitman, and grew up in Townsend,Ma. He had resided in Townsend for 79 years before moving to Maine in 2006.

He served in the U.S. Army from July 1945 to December 1948. He was a proud Veteran. He worked for P.J. Keating for over 39 years until officially retiring in 1989. He joined AA in 1982, and enjoyed sobriety for over 40 years. He prided himself in his commitments, and was a sought after speaker for meetings helping others with stayin sober.

He enjoyed being in his workshop, fixing cars or tinkering, etc. Summers included fishing in Maine. In later years he was an active member of Crossroads to Calvary in Morrel, ME.

A private service is planned at Forest Hills Cemetery, Fitchburg, MA.

Memorial donations may be made to the MSPCA, 350 South Huntington Ave.,Boston, MA 02130

Wow ! Sam had a long life. Lot's of work memories with Sam. Good laughs. Condolences to his family.
As he did I spent many years at Keatings. (42 yrs.)
Have thought of him many times.
