WESMINSTER -- Mary E. (Horton) Vedoe, 90, of Westminster, died Monday, June 6, surrounded by her family at the Heywood Hospital in Gardner.

She was born in Shrewsbury, on Jan. 10, 1921, a daughter of the late, George M. and Evangeline (Marr) Horton. Mary grew up there and graduated from Shrewsbury High School in 1938.

Shortly after her high school graduation she went to work for the Sate Mutual Life Insurance Company and would later move to Rochester, NY where she continued to work in the insurance field. In 1950 she moved back to Shrewsbury and managed the family grocery store "Horton's Market" until 1955.

In 1961 she moved to Westminster and became active on many town boards. Mary was the 1st women selectman serving from 1977 to 1992. She also served on the Conservation Commission and the Westminster Historical Society, where she was assistant treasurer for 20 years. Mary also volunteered at the Westminster Elementary School and was a member of the Meetinghouse School Council. She was a former 4H Club leader and Cub Scout Den Mother. Mary was a member and past Worthy Matron of the Jessamine Chapter 75 Order of the Eastern Star and former active member of the First Congregational Church of Westminster. She was a current member of the Heritage Bible Chapel in Princeton.

Her husband of 50 years, Russell A. Vedoe died in 1996. She leaves a daughter, Cheryl A. Vedoe of Half Moon Bay, CA; two sons, William H. Vedoe and his wife Dorothy of Orange and John R. Vedoe and his wife Tanya of Westminster; two granddaughters, Stephanie Vedoe and Jacalyn Thompson both of Westminster; a grandson, Michael Thompson and his wife Amy of South Hadley; two nieces and two nephews. In addition to her husband she is predeceased by a sister, Grace Williams and a brother, Archie Horton.

VEDOE -- Mary's funeral service will be celebrated on Friday, June 10, at 7 PM in the Heritage Bible Chapel, 182 Brooks Station Rd., Princeton. A calling hour, prior to the service, will be held from 6 to 7 PM in the Church. From the intersection of RT 31 and Rt. 62 take Boylston Rd. (down the hill) which becomes Brooks Station Rd. Church will be about 3 miles on left. Transportation may be available to those in need, please call the Heritage Bible Chapel at 978-464-5100 for more information. Burial in the Woodside Cemetery in Westminster will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be lade to the Heritage Bible Chapel, 182 Brooks Station Rd., Princeton, MA 01541. The Westminster Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 123 Main St. is directing the funeral arrangements. www.masciarellifamilyfuneralhomes.net

Dear John, Billy and Cheryl,

Cheryl, Billy and John, I was saddened to hear of the loss of your mother. I have many fond memories of her; to this day she was one of the most gracious ladies I have ever known. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
