Robert Shaughnessy Obituary

Fitchburg

Robert "Bob" Andrew Shaughnessy, age 88, passed away on October 9 in Fitchburg MA. His wife Judy (Gelinas), children Robert Shaughnessy of Springfield VA and Noel Roy of Leominster MA, and grandchildren Kevin Shaughnessy of Arlington VA and Lillian Roy of Leominster MA were at his bedside to say goodbye. He was predeceased by his parents John and Elsie, and brother Jack. During his final journey was lovingly cared for by Beacon Hospice and the staff at Fitchburg Healthcare.

Bob had many professional accomplishments throughout his academic career, retiring as Professor Emeritus. He earned multiple degrees from Fitchburg State University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute and National Science Foundation Studies at University of California Berkeley and Stevens Institute.

Forever humble, he always deflected any praise for himself and lavishly praised the achievements of others. Bob was known for his striking white hair, kindness, friendly manner, and ability to cherish every moment. He enjoyed traveling the world, theater (especially Rodgers and Hammerstein), great books, museums, and the classics. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed the company of many friends, and could easily quote Shakespeare or tell the most enjoyable stories. Bob's many real-life adventures growing up and from his time in the service were the basis for most of our favorite stories. His decades as a professor gave him pleasure in providing teachable moments well beyond retirement. He was extraordinarily compassionate and always available to family, friends, and his students.

His first and greatest love was spending time with his family, and ensuring they knew they were his greatest treasure. Bob was a loving, caring and endlessly entertaining partner of the love of his life, Judy, for 54 years. He adored his children Rob and Noel, and grandchildren Kevin and Lily. Every day with them was a precious joyful adventure. He never said goodbye without saying "I Love You".

He will be forever remembered by his children, grandchildren and extended family as a gift never taken for granted. He lived a full life. He dutifully served his country, family, and community throughout his life. He wanted all to remember him with a smile instead of sadness even though he could not finish a birthday card, a family event, or special moment without tearing up. He made every day special, he loved and was loved. He will be missed.

I´m so sorry to learn that Bob Shaughnessy - Professor Emeritus, and my longtime friend, colleague and mentor at Fitchburg State University - passed away. Bob was chair of the computer science department when he hired me to teach at the school. I´ll never forget Bob. He was the salt of the earth. Incredible teacher. Great human being. My heart goes out to his wife Judy, their children Robert and Noel, and their families.
