Selma Sjoberg Obituary

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Selma M. (Mindt) Sjoberg, 100, a Fitchburg native, died of natural causes on Friday, March 16, at The Nathaniel Witherell Nursing Home in Greenwich, Conn. She resided in Riverside, Conn., for the past several years.

Born in Fitchburg on April 7, 1906, the daughter of Pauline and August Mindt, she graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1924 and worked in the accounting department of W.E. Aubuchon for 16 years. She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church.

Throughout her long life she was an active community volunteer, serving as a member of the Girl Scout Council and as a Cub Scout den mother. She established the garden at Emanuel Lutheran Church, tending it for 14 years, and was an active member of the church Prayer Tree. She volunteered at Burbank Hospital and was recognized for 20 years of service there. She knit hundreds of mittens for children’s programs such as Head Start. On the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of State College, she was honored for her volunteering, as an example of one of the hundred people who made a significant difference in the community.

Mrs. Sjoberg is survived by her son, Charles E. Sjoberg and his wife, Helen, of Medina, N.Y.; her daughter, Pauline L. Franck and her husband, Richard, of Riverside, Conn.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her husband, Elmer G. Sjoberg, predeceased her in 1954.

SJOBERG -- Burial is private. A memorial service will be held at Emanuel Lutheran Church on Thursday, March 29, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Emanuel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 1200 John Fitch Highway, Fitchburg, MA 01420.
