Active in the Townsend community,

retired teacher, decorated Army Vet; 79

TOWNSEND -- William H. Hubbard, 79, of Townsend, died Friday, July 26, 2013, at his residence.

Mr. Hubbard was born in Cambridge, May 8, 1934, a son of William C. and Eileen (Turner) Hubbard, and has resided in Townsend for 40 years.

Mr. Hubbard began his education at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He later continued his education at Fitchburg State University where he received his bachelor's degree, master's degree and certificate of advanced graduate studies.

For 20 years, Mr. Hubbard served his country in the United States Army, retiring in 1974 at the rank of Sergeant First Class. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam, and was the recipient of two Purple Heart Medals.

Following his retirement from the armed forces, he taught special education mathematics for 17 years at Nashua High School, Nashua, NH.

He leaves his wife of 57 years, Charlotte T. (Trombly) Hubbard; a son, William C. Hubbard of Fitchburg; three daughters, Nancy A. Brownell of Lunenburg, Kathleen A. Hubbard of Townsend, Joy C. Cole of San Diego, CA; a sister, Susan Nauman of Mound City, MO; six grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Merrill of NY, and Elizabeth Warrell of VA.

Through the years, Mr. Hubbard remained active in many civic and community oriented efforts. He was a founding member of Townsend Emergency Assistant Mobiles (TEAM),was an active member of the Townsend Senior Citizens where he offered instruction in genealogy study. He was a member of the Townsend VFW, and the Vietnam Veterans Association.

He enjoyed playing cribbage and bingo. He and his wife spent many winters in Fort Myers, Florida, and one year spent six months traveling across the nation in their recreational vehicle.

HUBBARD -- Mr. Hubbard's family will receive family and friends at calling hours from 2-5 p.m., Sunday at the T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 250 Main Street (Rte. 119), Townsend Center. Please see www.andersonfuneral.com for additional information. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Townsend Senior Citizens, 16 Dudley Road, Townsend, MA 01469.
