Gray Brewer Obituary

GRAY BREWER, Sr. SHARPES Gray Brewer, Sr. died peace fully from natu ral causes at his riverfront home in Sharp es, on Monday February 11, 2008, one day short of his 100th birthday. After moving to Titusville in 1956, he served as Official Court Reporter in Brevard and Seminole Counties until his retirement. Gray was born February 12, 1908, in Washington, DC to parents Gilbert R. Brewer, M.D. and Minnie Trammel Brewer, of Stonefort, Illinois. He was fond of telling people that he was named Gray by his father, who at the time was a medical student and had just received a perfect score in his human anat omy course based on the med ical textbook Grays Anatomy, by Henry Gray. After high school, Brewer attended Southern Illinois Uni versity for two years and later trained as a court reporter in Chicago with shorthand pioneer John Robert Gregg. He worked for a time for the United Fruit Company in Central America where he developed a lifelong love of overly ripe bananas. He and Mildred Elizabeth Pearce of Wilmington NC mar ried on May 23, 1936, and enjoyed 65 years of marriage together until her death in 2002. Gray is survived by his three children, Barbara Brewer of Rockledge, Gray Brewer, Jr. of Sharpes, and Bryan Brewer of Clinton, WA,;as well as four grandchildren and one great grandson. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Cynthia Brewer Wiemken, Gilbert R. Brewer, Jr., and Myrtle Brewer. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made to Wuesthoff Brevard Hospice whose care for Gray has been greatly appreciated. The family will host an informal remembrance open house at the Brewer home in Sharpes today, February 12, 2008, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Mr. Brewer was indeed a one of a kind person with a delightful outlook, wisdom and intelligence. I was always impressed how he would never allow his thinking to age. Mr. Brewer was an impressive person with exceptional qualities. If I could speak to him right now, I would respectfully say "well done sir".
