Dear Helen, Mike, Linda and family, Though Lou is gone he is not forgotten. He lives in our memories here at the McLarty Treasure Museum. We cherish his contribution to the course of history, not only as a Treasure Salvor but also as a friend and mentor. Lou’s many stories are not forgotten and I share them with our many visitors, especially with the children. Lou was a good husband, father and friend…we will miss him. We know he will see God’s smiling face when he has “crossed the bar”.

Mike, condolensces and prayers to you and your family from the Philbin family. Never had the opportunity to meet your Dad , but based on how you coached basketball and Tanner, he certainly passed on some great traits to you.

Please accept my condolences. Lou was a great friend and mentor. I remember with fondness the many lunches that I enjoyed with Lou and Helen each January when I attended the FUN Show. Lou was a man of integrity and great character. I was honored to have met him and been able to call him my friend. In treasure terms he was truly a "cache of a lifetime". I was so sorry to read of Lou's passing. Although I hadn't seen or talked with Lou for decades, just yesterday I was thinking about him and mentioned him to another friend. He was a fine man and will be remembered for that even more than the treasures he found.

My friend indeed! Sunken Treasure, the catylist. Lou, a man who has welcomed me with open arms the first time we met many years ago and shared his tremendous wealth of knowledge with me over the years. A walking encyclopedia! What an honor and a privelage to have known such a fine caring man. The treasure community has lost a "master". I will miss but never ever forget, the many things that we've shared over the years. ESPECIALLY getting "shot at" in the restuarant with a paper straw wrapper by Lou. Yes, Lou IS, my friend indeed!

A dear friend, a mentor, a man who taught me so much about Spanish Colonial numismatics, and above all, the man who introduced me to my wife of 40 years. Both Nancy and I will miss him enormously and will never forget him for his knowledge, kindness, and compassion.

I was thinking and talking about Lou on Sunday evening at the Delta 50th anneversy. If it were not for Lou's knowlege of explosives and his passion for safety, I believe we may not be launching anything from the Cape or KSC.
Lou was a true gentleman and an outstanding teacher. The US Space program has lost a giant.

Lou Ullian will long be remembered by us as a gentleman. As a numismatist, scuba diver, and treasure salvager, Lou was part of the "greatest generation" and always a gentleman in all respects. Goodbye...to a treasured colleague.

I am so sorry to here of Mr Ullian's passing. I pray for comfort to his wife Helen and his family.
Only, recently in the past Few months did I ever have the opportunity to speak with "lou" and his wife Helen on the phone. At auction I had purchased a 42" inch money chain from the 1715 fleet,it came with a cert from Real eight signed by Kip wagner. I wanted more info, so I was able to get lou's phone number and leave him a message. I was shocked when he was kind enough to take the time to call me back. He enjoyed telling me that he very clearly remember my chain being found on the Cabin wreck under a cannon in 1964. He went on with other details such as to verify Kips handwriting on my cert. It was like being there in the early days of Real Eight! I asked if I could send him all the info he provided me ,and would he sign it . Sure enough, It was returned to me signed by MR Lou Ullian. His wife said come and visit us if you are ever down this way! Lou's signed letter will remain with my fleet chain forever. And again although I just met Mr Ullian and his wife recently, I was so impressed by there warm and kindness. I will miss him. David Vapnitsky.
