GENEVA - Astrid Helleland Mulvey, 99, of Geneva, New York passed away after a brief illness on Thursday, July 24, 2025.
Astrid was born in Bergen, Norway and grew up on Geneva's North Main Street with her parents, Olav and Agnes (Larsen) Helleland and sisters Solveig and Elsa. The three young Helleland sisters supported their mother after their father Olav's sudden passing in 1942. Astrid expressed fond memories of her daily walks on North Main St. to her work at Lincoln Rochester Bank as well as a daily stop at the Geneva Public Library. Like all who lived in that era, World War II impacted her life when she had a job at Sampson Naval Base. It was there that she experienced the stress among overseas departures of young servicemen heading to war. After the war she met Bill Mulvey of Geneva on a double date and her life was fulfilled as wife, homemaker, parent to five children and loyal sister, daughter and friend. She loved life on the lake, summers at the family home on Sunset Bay and hosting dinners aboard the family boat 'Challenger.' For decades she supported her family's active participation in sailboat races while spectating from ashore at Seneca Yacht Club and Star class sailing regattas held throughout the northeast. She was a member of Seneca Yacht Club and Geneva Country Club. Even at the age of 99 she managed the Mulvey household, orchestrating the annual move to the summer home, and keeping track of an active family via text and email. She enthusiastically supported her children's careers, life passions and successes. Astrid was gifted with a sparkling sense of humor. She enjoyed travel with family and friends, Hobart lacrosse, frequent trips to Wegmans, word puzzles, the hair appointments at Stacie's and breakfast at area restaurants. Connections with her relatives in Norway brought joy along with multiple visits to her homeland. She embraced her Norwegian heritage along with the unique Scandinavian approach to life.
Astrid's role as a parent volunteer at North Street School led to part time positions in the school district and eventually as secretary to the principal at Geneva High School. She took pride in helping to organize the school's daily operations, budget and annual graduation. Her 'mom' skills were gladly extended to GHS students and faculty alike, always listening and offering wit and charm.
Astrid was predeceased by her husband William Mulvey, Sr.; parents Olav and Agnes (Larsen) Helleland; sisters Solveig (Richard) Cook and Elsa (William) Allen. She is survived by her five children: Anne (Robert) Westcott, William Mulvey, Jr., Robert (Sandy) Mulvey, James (Catherine) Mulvey and Daniel Mulvey; along with several nieces and nephews. Astrid was comfortable in her role as 'Grandma' and 'Great Grandma Astrid' She enjoyed seven grandchildren: Lisa (Dave) Brefini, Brian Mulvey, Kevin (Gabrielle) Westcott, Ryan Mulvey, Samantha Mulvey, Aidan Mulvey, Alessandra Mulvey and four great-grandchildren: Elena, Luca, Isla and newborn Henry.
