https://donate.wcny.org/wcny/donateCarl was born on August 15, 1932 in Lorain, OH the son of Marguerite Aten and Carl F. Aten, Sr. He graduated from Lorain High School, The College of Wooster, and earned a PhD in Physical Chemistry from Brown University. He enjoyed a long career as a chemistry professor at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. He also spent many summers doing research at Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station.
He met his wife Heather in the College of Wooster band where they both played French Horn. They married July 9, 1955 and had four children; Steven, Ralph, Keith, and Lorraine. He and his family moved to Geneva in 1962.
Carl enjoyed playing tennis and squash, hiking, canoeing and camping. He and Heather had a decades-long run of Parchesi games, and spent many hours with family playing cards. He was a classical music enthusiast, was a long-time member of the church choir at The Presbyterian Church, and attended a summer classical choral camp in the Berkshires for many years.
He loved to travel with Heather, and they made wonderful memories on his sabbaticals both within the US and abroad.
He was Heather's greatest helpmate with her many volunteer responsibilities, particularly the Geneva Court Watching Project.
Known by family and friends as a self-avowed luddite, Carl's main source of entertainment in his later years was listening to classical music on the radio. One of his last-spoken wishes was to send a check to WCYN Classic FM.
He is survived by his son Steven; daughter Lorraine (Arun); brother John (Elizabeth); and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and (grand) nieces and nephews.
Carl was predeceased by his wife and sons, Ralph and Keith, and sisters, Ruth Wigton and Dorothy Armitage.
