Henry Arms Obituary

GENEVA – Henry Arms, 81, passed away Friday (January 4, 2019) at Geneva General Hospital.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday (January 9) at DeVaney-Bennett Funeral Home in Geneva, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday (January 10) at St. Stephens Church in Geneva, New York, with a reception to follow at the Parish Hall at St. Francis Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to the St. Jude's Research Hospital (https://www.stjude.org).

Henry was born in Paintsville, Kentucky on July 2, 1937, to William and Lucinda Blair Arms. Henry joined the Navy at the age of 17, and after his service he made his home in Geneva. A member of Geneva Laborers Local 103 for many years, Henry worked as a construction laborer and foreman. Henry drank many cups of coffee at Laura's employment before she finally said yes to a date.

Henry made sure everyone in his home was warm and well fed, cooking hearty breakfasts and sitting in the cold to warm up the car before school. He was adored by his nieces and nephews and was known to rile them before sending them home with their parents. Henry's hobbies included whittling, woodworking, and storytelling. The Arms men spent many weekends in the woods with their coffee and rifles, but no deer were ever brought home. Henry will be remembered by his loved ones for his huge heart and endearing smile.

Henry is survived by his wife of 43 years, Laura Lawton Arms; his daughter, Christina (John) Brundage; his son, Daniel (Alison) Arms; grandsons Robert Henry Brundage, Dominic Arms; his brother, Harry (Jane) Arms; his sister, Linda (Louis) Linthicum; and a large and loving extended family.

Henry was preceded in death by his father, William Arms; his mother, Lucinda Arms; his brothers Lloyd Arms, James Arms, and Paul Arms; his sisters, Martha Long and Mary Smith.

Henry was my foreman in the 1970's. He always treated me like a son. He even called me "son". He watched out for all of the men under him to keep them safe, and showed them the right way. I am sorry he is gone. I will not forget him.

Laura, Christina and Daniel,
We were very saddened to learn of Hank's passing. We will never forget the kindness that he showed toward our mother. You Laura, and Hank were always so caring and sweet to Mom. May your many loving memories console you during this very difficult time.
