Henry Elliott Wetherby

1928 - 2021

WOLCOTT - Henry Elliott Wetherby, age 92, left his wheelchair behind and walked into the arms of our Lord on May 22, 2021.

A celebration of his life will be held in the near future when all of his extended family can come home.

Henry was born on June 10, 1928, the son of Harry and Mary Follett Wetherby and was a life-long resident of Wolcott. He was a 1945 graduate of Leavenworth Central School where he played soccer, basketball, and baseball, and was a member of the band, the orchestra, and glee club. He delivered newspapers and milk, worked at his father's A&P, drove truck, worked at the canning factory, and as a grease monkey until he started to work fulltime for RG&E in December 1946. He worked at RG&E for 43 and a half years until his retirement in July 1990.

Henry was an accomplished woodworker and enjoyed making everything from baby cradles, tables, and furniture to breadboards, salad tongs, and knick-knacks. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wolcott, a former member of the Wolcott Volunteer Fire Department and the Masons, and was a walking encyclopedia of local history.

He is survived by his loving wife, E. Phyllis Fitch Wetherby, whom he married on October 10, 1948; and by their eight children Mary (Robert) Gleason, Noreen (William) Soneira, Henry (Kathleen) Wetherby Jr., Thomas (Roxanne) Wetherby, George (Cynthia) Wetherby, Claudia Wetherby, Philip (Mary) Wetherby, and Matthew (Pattie) Wetherby; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; several cousins, a niece and several nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; a sister and brother-in-law Jane (Don) Syron; a brother and sister-in-law David (Joan) Wetherby; an infant grandson; several cousins, and a nephew.
