James O'Reilly Obituary

PENN YAN- James D. O'Reilly age 84, of Penn Yan, N.Y. died on January 5, 2023, after a three-year journey with Alzheimer's disease.

Jim was born in Rochester, New York on August 16, 1938. After graduating from Aquinas Institute, he served four years in the US Navy stationed in Bermuda. When people would thank him for his service, he always explained that he was having a wonderful time in Bermuda.

He lived many years in Australia and traveled extensively in Southeast Asia while working for an offshore navigation company. He entertained his family and caregivers with tales of his adventures in the South Sea Islands including encounters with headhunters.

He spent his later years as a master gun engraver, attaining a national reputation for his unparalleled scrollwork and animal depictions.

Jim is survived by his son, Christopher O'Reilly, (Susan) and their children, Doughal, Isla, and Rowan; and by his daughter, Catherine McGowan (Rob), and their son Max, all of Australia. He is also survived by his siblings, Eileen O'Reilly, Margaret Hayes, Elizabeth O'Reilly, and Robert O'Reilly; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Service and interment private. Arrangements with Weldon Funeral Home, Penn Yan.
