Marilyn Sands Obituary

Marilyn ""Mickey"" Sands, 96, of Delray Beach, Fla., passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, in Canandaigua, N.Y., on the afternoon of July 07, 2022.

The family will celebrate the life of Mickey privately.

Memorial contributions in Mickey's honor, may be made to The Sands Family YMCA, c/o the Canandaigua YMCA, 32 N Main St, Canandaigua, NY 14424, Rochester Regional Health Foundation, 300 Monroe Ave, Suite 400, Rochester, NY 14607, or F.F. Thompson Foundation, 350 Parrish St., Canandaigua, NY 14424.

Born and raised in Manhattan, N.Y., Mickey studied at the Woman's College of University of North Carolina and then transferred to Hunter College in Manhattan, earning a degree in biochemistry.

Mickey and Marvin were married in the spring of 1947 at a ceremony in New York City, and the couple settled in Canandaigua where they became fixtures in the community for many years. Mickey moved to Florida many years ago, but always enjoyed her summer visits to Canandaigua, where she enjoyed seeing family and friends. Mickey was a supportive wife, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, as well as a generous philanthropist.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Jennifer Sands and Rob and Pamela Sands; son-in-law, Dr. Andy Stern; and many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who filled her life with joy and happiness. As one of her grandson's noted: ""Mickey exemplifies everything that's special about this family - she's experienced so much in her life, extreme ups and downs and she has Buddha like perspective on what's important in this world. She exemplifies what's important by showing compassion, humility, grace, and will always be brutally honest with you. A refreshing combination of attributes – as some people have a limit on how much love they can give to others - Mickey has no limits.""

She was predeceased by her husband, Marvin Sands (1999), founder of Constellation Brands; and daughter, Dr. Laurie Sands (1995).

A year may have gone by but her memory is still fresh and beautiful. Although I have many wonderful memories of Mickey one fun one often comes to mind. Mickey and Marvin lived next door to us for many years when I was growing up. They had a large yard and hired the services of a gardener (Clarence) but Mickey did the lawn mowing herself. She loved zooming around on that riding lawnmower and once explained that the reason she loved it so much was that no one (I think she meant the kids!) could bother her while she was mowing. I think she set the stage for Rob´s later motorbike course! I miss her. Even though I didn´t see much of her in later years she was an important person in my life. A fun upbeat mom, a supportive friend to my family when my father passed away, a hostess for my wedding shower, and a wonderful luncheon companion for many special summertime lunches. Truly a beautiful lady.

I am so sorry to hear that Mickey no longer graces our world. She was the kindest most gracious person I have ever met. I loved heheh embraced life and lived it to the fullest. I was lucky enough to be invited to lunch at her "new" lake house on many occasions when we celebrated Ruth´s birthdays. Her dedication to Ruth was so very touching. When I think of her I always smile and know that so many people are better for having known her. Rest In Peace Mickey.

She was one of the kindest woman I have ever met. It was a privilege to know her for many years. She was proud of me I learned to play mahjong; not so much bridge! My condolences to Richard, Rob and the entire Sands family.
