Ruth Towers Obituary

To passers-by, she was "the lady in the window playing the piano."
Ruth Towers was born in Brooklyn, New York, to parents Louis and Esther on August 20, 1922, and passed away July 13, 2017.
Brilliant, she was a 20-year-old graduate of Hunter College, having majored in French, with a minor in Spanish. Eventually, she would learn to speak seven languages fluently. Concurrent with her academic experience was her ongoing study of piano, with her exceptional teacher, Sophie Nostitz. Beginning in early childhood, she learned to "let the music sing." Throughout her life, her piano career served as an integral part of her persona.
During World War II, she worked for Voice of America in New York as a Radio Technician. While still a New Yorker, she tutored French and Spanish, and taught piano as well. She gave recitals at several veterans hospitals, under auspices of the American Theater Wing.
In 1948, she became a resident of Seneca Falls, when she was married to Dr. Saul Towers. The couple enjoyed golf during their 50-year membership at the Seneca Falls Country Club. Ruth and Saul enjoyed numerous travel experiences - many that included an opportunity for her to offer a recital. These opportunities would arise overseas and on the seas, as well as in the United States. Ruth frequently performed recitals at Ferris Hills in Canandaigua, at Waverly Heights in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania, at the Seneca Falls Library, and often, in her home. Ruth was an active member of the Fortnightly Club of Seneca Falls for over sixty years. She was a member of the Finger Lakes chapter of Hadassah. She and her husband were affiliated with Temple Beth-El in Geneva, Temple B'nai Israel in Auburn, and Temple Adath Yeshurun in Syracuse. Her volunteer activities also included the Seneca County Medical Auxiliary, where she served at Taylor Brown Hospital.Ruth recorded her work - one can hear some of her classical music by visiting her website: http://www.ruthtowers.com. She was proud to always mention that her grandson Adam Kaye created her website for her.
Her 59-year marriage ended in April 2007, with the passing of her husband. She was predeceased by their son Michael in 1985. Survivors are Judy Kaye (Marc Goldberg) and Harry (Kelly) Towers, grandchildren Bob and Laura Towers, Adam (Sara) and Robyn Kaye, and three great-grandchildren - Bryce, Miles, and Ruby.
For those wishing to make a memorial contribution, choices may include some of her favorites - the Seneca Falls Library, Third Street Music School Settlement in New York, and Hospice of the Finger Lakes in Auburn - or the charity of one's choice.

Ruth was as wonderful woman who befriended me when I was a young mother. I so enjoyed my time with Ruth and Dr. Towers, and was so awed by Ruth's talent, warmth and zest for life, that my daughter's middle name is Ruth.

So sad to hear of Ruth's passing! As a kid, I used to always ride my bike/walk down Cayuga Street, hoping to see her playing piano (and being envious that she had such a beautiful instrument right in that picture window!) Later, when I was in high school, I had the privilege of hearing her play in a concert at the Delevan theater at the NYCC. What I distinctly remember was that after playing a 20-25 minute Sonata - and receiving much applause - she announced to the audience "You know, that wasn't my best performance, I think I would like to play that again for you!" And promptly sat down, and played it again! Needless to say, she received a standing ovation the second time! It was wonderful!

May you Rest in Peace, Ms. Towers!

So very sorry to learn of Mrs Towers passing. I grew up living next door to Dr & Mrs Towers. Many of my childhood memories consist of sitting in my bedroom listening to Mrs Towers on her piano. It will be very difficult for my parents to find neighbors as wonderful as your parents both were. Cayuga Street has certainly lost an icon.
