Thomas Millington Obituary

GENEVA - Thomas Muzzy Millington, 83, passed away February 11, 2023 at Geneva General Hospital.

A Celebration of Life will be held on February 25 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at DeVaney-Bennett Funeral Home, 181 N. Main Street, Geneva.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Geneva Public Library at 244 Main Street in Geneva.

Thomas Millington was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather, whose intellect and curiosity guided illuminating conversations in his classroom and at the dinner table. Millington was Professor Emeritus at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, having arrived on campus in 1966 as an instructor of political science and rising to full professor in 1981. He also pioneered several semesters of international studies in Spain, Mexico and Switzerland. Millington retired in 1997 after more than 30 years of service to the Colleges.

Thomas Millington was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey in 1939 to Dr. Herbert Millington and Betsy Hamilton. After graduating from Ridgewood High School, he went on to play defensive tackle for the Williams College football team and later earned an M.A. and Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. He was a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania, University of Florence in Florence, Italy and University of Colorado at Grand Junction. He published several books on Latin American history: Colombia's Military and Brazil's Monarchy and Debt Politics After Independence: The Funding Crisis in Bolivia. He served as consultant to the Central Bank of Bolivia. Research and teaching took him abroad to numerous countries including Bolivia, Italy and Argentina.

Thomas Millington was an adventurer, who met and married his beloved wife Rosario in her home country of Bolivia. They would enjoy 56 years of joy and laughter while raising their three sons. He was a wonderful father, cheerful and encouraging of his children's dreams.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Rosario Vivado Millington; his children Thomas Vivado Millington, Kenneth and Anette Millington and Gregory Millington and Maria Brown; and grandson Navarro Millington; brothers Herbert Millington and Jeffrey and Linda Millington.

I arrived as a newly hired young faculty member in the Political Science department at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in fall 1986. Tom was a friendly, welcoming and kind presence, someone who genuinely wanted me to be successful. We often talked about common students and the many joys and challenges of teaching. He was an excellent listener who rarely, if ever, passed judgment in a censorious way. And he loved the exchange of ideas , which is a hallmark of an academic community. I loved to see Tom´s obvious joy when I asked how Rosario and his boys were doing. They invited me to their home for a meal not long after I arrived at HWS. I had the sense that he was watching out for me and wanted me to feel welcome. I loved seeing Tom at home with his beautiful family. He loved Rosario and his boys so much. I am very sorry for your loss. I am fortunate to have known Tom Millington.

I always appreciated the intellectual give and take in the many classes I had with Tom as well as the advice he imparted on establishment of my Fraternity Chapter at Hobart. Truly sad to hear of his family. My condolences to Rosario and Tom's family.
