David Marshall Obituary

David Brietz Marshall
David Brietz Marshall, Born in June 1952, David was the third child and only son of Roger Lee and Betty Brietz Marshall. David grew up in Hillsborough, North Carolina. As a child, he enjoyed exploring the woods around his home and fishing with his grandfather. These experiences engendered in him a deep appreciation for nature and imbued in him the characteristic of thoughtful reflection. After attending Orange County High School where he played football and was a member of the band, David went on to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he studied Business and Accounting. His senior year of high school, David met Susan Sharrock through mutual friends. They were married in 1973 in an outdoor ceremony officiated by Susan's father and surrounded by their family and beautiful fall colors. He wore the shirt she made for him. She wore the wedding dress she made for herself. In the coming years David and Susan grew a family with two children, Buck and Blue, as well as a successful carpentry business they operated for over 30 years. As a team, David and Susan built careers in the home industry, sharing and growing in each other's experiences providing mutual support and professional success. As an entrepreneur, David constructed numerous homes for families throughout North Georgia. Late in his career, David changed course and joined the team at The Fockele Garden Company. For 10 years with Fockele David helped design and construct hardscape and landscape projects ranging from backyard fountains to detailed streambed constructions at The Atlanta Botanical Garden in Gainesville and the Northeast Georgia Hospital at Braselton. Throughout these various experiences David always strived not only to learn, but also to teach. As a builder and a maker, he valued the process as much as the result. As a leader he valued the people he worked with as much as their experience and contributions. David based his life grounded on the conservative Christian values he learned from his family as a child. He carried these values to his own children and grandchildren. As a father David was engaged in his children's education and activities, supporting their interests and ambitions in the stands, in the audience, in the driver's seat crisscrossing the state for various events. David is predeceased by his son, Buck Brietz; and his parents, Roger and Betty. David is survived by Susan, his wife of 47 years; his daughter Blue and son in law JW, with their children Rena, Denman, Landon, Gavin, and Naomi; his sisters Beth Porter, and Tommie and Joe Bradford; his sister in law, Renee Sharrock; his niece and nephews, Robbin Kazmarek, Chris Porter, and Andrew Sharrock. Memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. June 25 in the Chapel of Memorial Park South. The family received guests immediately following the service.
