ALAN VerPLANCK Obituary

ALAN LEE VerPLANCK, 67, passed away Thursday, July 27, 2017 at home. Born May 1, 1950, he was a son of Orpha and Charles "Chuck" Ver Planck. He was preceded in death by his high school sweetheart and wife, Victoria, in November of 2016. Together they shared over 42 years of marriage and gave their three children, Carl, Anna, and Zoe a storied childhood. In high school Alan would meet his would be wife, Vicky. High school was of little interest to him and subsequently he suffered academically. An empathetic English teacher vouched for him when he graduated, and Michigan State University granted him a probationary semester in East Lansing. In college he found a calling and excelled in English Literature, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Vicky encouraged him to apply for a Rhodes Scholarship. He did so begrudgingly as it would delay marriage plans, and he himself was unconvinced of his own qualifcations. Unsurprisingly to those who knew him, he was accepted despite his doubts. He spent three years at Oxford studying English Literature before returning to Michigan. He decided to enroll in the University of Michigan Law School for reasons which still remain unclear. One story was that it offered more fiscal viabilities than an English degree alone. Another was that after years of wrangling language he sought the more tangible constructs of law (although he would say later that law was anything but tangible). Another favorite explanation was that in high school a teacher told him he could never be a lawyer and he thus took it as a challenge. After law school Vicky and Alan settled in Fort Wayne. Many opportunities abounded for a young lawyer with his impressive education, but family was paramount his entire life, and he and Vicky never cared to venture from the Midwest and family connections in Fort Wayne. In Fort Wayne Alan settled into a position at Barrett McNagny Law Firm where he became partner not long after. Eventually he left to become a founding partner at Eilbacher Scott. His law career will be remembered for his labor efforts defending the common man, and donating service to those who could not afford a voice in any other way. He is survived by his son, Carl; daughters, Anna and Zoe; adopted son, Andy Kennedy; and grandson Alan. He also leaves behind brother, Kent and sister-in-law, Rhonda; sister-in-law Yvonne Evanoff-Joseph; brothers-in-law, Carl and Eric Evanoff and their spouses Juleen and Marjorie; and Evanoff nephews Gabriel, Raphael, Emily, Claire, and Alex. Extended Fort Wayne families include members of the Skimos, and Ridenours. His recently departed Vicky, children, grandson and family meant the world to him. Memory Eternal. Service is 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, 2017 at St. Nicholas Eastern Orthodox Church, 3535 Crescent Ave., with visitation one hour prior. Visitation will also be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, 2017 at the church with a Trisagion service at 7 p.m. Preferred memorials are to the church. Alan was one of the best and most memorable students I had in 35 years at Michigan State. Students like Alan made me a better teacher -- and my courses better courses.

His profession notwithstanding, Alan made his humanness felt: Kind, affable, reasonable, open, accepting, perspective-sharing, courageous, sensitive, well-considered words/statements, and an enviable global view of the world, among others. In my heart and deeds, I considered him as, "a genuine friend"...although I missed the occasion to tell him just that; and, now [for where he is at] he will know it for a fact. Have a safe trip, Alan, and may the heavenly angels meet with you at the gate, and to usher you in...until we meet, again. God bless!

I first met Al as a reporter, working on a story about some workers who were being cheated by an employer. I was impressed by his dedication to defending the "litle guy." Although he often said he really wanted to be a writer, I assured him that the law was a much better choice! I will miss him.

Last November, Alan wrote this eloquent, heartfelt tribute to his wife, Vicky, the love of his life. It's a lot more than wordsmithery, though I admire it on that score, too.

Now, sadly, eight months later, it falls to someone else -- or more likely, to his near and extended family -- to craft Alan's own obituary. And as the old idiom says, they have done him proud. As well as words can, what they have written captures, I think, this brilliant but down-to-earth and family-centered man.

I knew and admired Alan as a fellow lawyer, of course. And we had a shared background in English literature, prior to becoming attorneys. But I knew him best as a long-time Board Member colleague on -- and also, for many years, President of -- the Friends of the Allen County Public Library. This was yet another facet of Alan's effective, but below-the-radar, public service in this community.

My wish for Alan's and Vicky's near and extended family is this ... Hold fast to those many, joyful memories -- the merest ice berg tip of which gets mention in both obituaries -- and that will see you safely through this time of mourning and sadness.

With sincere sympathy,
Tom Wooding

We were childhood friends; his niceness saved me, formed me. We discovered life's frustrations, life's joys. We were just old enough to get into everything, just young enough before the "mature" programs cruciform us into adultness. His friendship, our quiet discoveries of art, music, writing, plays, performances, laughter.
All these have never left me, nor my gratefulness for his friendship. Now, the sorrow and my heart left with his grace.

Al was an attorney who also served as a volunteer advocate for the "least among us". It will be a more difficult world for them with his passing.
