I grew up in South Bend and played against Andy in high school and either Babe Ruth or Senior League when he played for Yeager Buick. I only met him a few times, but I remember his sportsmanship and humility, despite his obvious talents on the diamond. So sorry to read of his passing in 2012.

I lived in South Bend for such a short time, but Andy was a good friend of mine in 8th and 9th grade. We played baseball together on the Clay Junior High team in 8th grade and won the South Bend city championship that year in a very large part due to Andy´s pitching talent. Even at that young age I was always in awe of his fastball and wicked curve ball. He was also a great quarterback and threw a great deep ball with such a strong arm. Somehow I still remember his laugh and spoken voice. I lost touch with Andy and about everyone else back then when we moved to Naperville IL after football season my freshman year. But all my friends were great friends and Andy was certainly one of them, all of which remain dear to me in fond memories.

Always in my heart ,

May 11, 2012

Do not stand by my grave and weep
I am not there I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamonds in the snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain
When you awake in the morning hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight
I am the soft starlight at night
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there - I did not die .

I had the great pleasure of playing with Andy in the St. Louis Cardinals Organization for three season's, 75, 76, 77. He was a talented pitcher and a great human being! We use to talk about South Bend, In. a lot because he was born there and most of my family was from there too. My condolences go out to his family. R.I.P. Andy.

I am so sad to hear of Andy's passing. I was a teammate of Andy's and caught him in 1972 when we played for the Komet's Connie Mack team in Fort Wayne. There was a magnetism about Andy that made you want to be in his orbit and just made him unforgettable. My deepest sympathies to the Replogles and his fiancee'.

What a shock to hear that Andy has passed too soon. I got to know this fine man in 1972 playing ball against him in high school and in the Connie Mack League that summer in Fort Wayne. Indeed, your skills and attitude inspired a lot of us to work harder to get better. Thanks for causing scouts to come to the Fort again during our times. Sorry I couldn't seem to teach you how to throw my curveball, and darn you for not teaching me the key to your velocity. You were a good man!

Bill & Queen, I have not had contact with you for many years. I always appreciated your friendship and our kid's relationship with each other. You have me deepest sympathy.

To the Replogle Family - I never knew Andy, but felt like I did. I am a Snider HS graduate from 1981. The reason I knew all about Andy was because my math teacher Coach Miller, followed his career and spoke very highly of him. He always talked about what a GREAT ball player he was. My deepest sympathy to your family. Elizabeth Jones - Fort Wayne IN

Dearest Replogles--The King Family from South Bend sends you their deepest sympathies. We are so sorry to hear of Andy's passing. My Dad Earl and my brother Gary continued to follow Andy's career after high school and throughout his careeer. Wow, what a team they must have in heaven now. With Andy pitching and the "Rookie" backing him up, along with others that had hearts of baseballs, it has to be a winning team. Dad's on the sidelines watching for sure. Our love and prayers to you and your family---

Bill & Queen,
I enjoyed watching Andy grow up and become the great guy he was. I remember umpiring games in which he pitched and seeing the look on the faces of the poor kids trying to catch up with one of his fastballs. I called a lot of pitches strikes by sound because everything came in so fast I couldn't really see it. Somewhere there is a pretty good game going on with a battery of Andy Replogle on the mound and Jim Peterson behind the plate. My deepest sympathy to you and my thoughts are with you.

So saddened to hear of Andy's death, my condolences to his mom and dad, brother Randy, and his fiancée, Sandy. I was a teammate of Andy's on the Clay baseball team. As I thought back, this remembrance made me smile and I know it would have put a big grin on Andy's face because I'm not going to talk about his pitching, but his hitting, or at least one at bat that I'll never forget. If I recall the time correctly it was the summer after the state championship. The rest I recall very clearly. We were playing a night game at Bendix field in the high school summer league. Andy was at bat, swung, and I heard a loud CRACK! Back then high school players used real bats and when you hit a ball squarely they did not go ‘ping' they went ‘CRACK'. Andy had hit a hard line drive to left center and as we all watched, I hoped it would find the gap and not be caught. Not to worry, nobody was catching this ball; it was still on the rise when it sailed over the outfielders. This ball could have inspired a special effect in The Natural, it just kept carrying, over the left field fence, over the grassy area, over Westmoor St. and the ball finally smashes into the front door (on the fly) of one of the homes that face the ball park on Westmoor. Now I'm just a 17 year old kid, but I'm thinking I've never seen a ball hit this hard before – it was an Ernie Banks style home run for sure. (Ernie hit a lot of line drive home runs out of Wrigley field). After the game our coach Jim Reinebold, a man not easily impressed, declared that Andy's blast was the hardest hit ball he had ever witnessed… and coach had played in, coached or watched more ball games than you would imagine possible, so he had quite a frame of reference. I'm sure everyone who was there that night remembers Andy's blast. It was special. Rest in peace, Ape – we miss you.
