She graduated from Harlan High School in 1949, a member of the National Honor Society and drum major for the marching band. Ann attended Colorado Women's College and then graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology, where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority and met Dave. After graduating in 1953, Ann and Dave were married on June 28, 1953, and lived in Washington, D.C., for two years, where Dave served as a Lieutenant in the Air Force and Ann worked as a speech pathologist.
