DAVID KARTHOLL Obituary

DAVID W. KARTHOLL, 62, died on Friday, Feb. 10, 2017, in Fort Wayne from pancreatic cancer. Born Dec. 3, 1954, in Fort Wayne where he lived until the mid-1980s and then moved to his property in Noble County. Dave was a unique, self-sufficient man who chose a simple lifestyle. He was a talented musician, renowned for his skill on the mandolin, and was a member of several well-known local bands, most recently Possum Trot Orchestra, Clusterfolk, and the Grateful Groove. Dave also taught guitar and mandolin at Fort Wayne Community Schools. He loved sports, especially basketball, volleyball and golf. Dave was an avid follower of high school and college teams. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, John C. and Nonajean (Zang) Kartholl. He is survived by his siblings, Steven R. Kartholl of Sarasota, Fla., Vicki J. (Joachim) Peters of Palatine, Ill., and Daniel F. (Cheryl) Kartholl of Fort Wayne; very special friend, Susie Norton of Brown County; uncle, Robert E. Zang of Southern Pines, N.C.; five nieces and nephews and their families. "Just as Dave set a good example with his way of living, he did the same with his way of leaving this world. His attitude was consistently positive, calm, and accepting, with his sense of humor never failing him throughout his illness. He will be dearly missed." Service is 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17, 2017, at D.O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road, with calling one hour. Calling also from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations to Smiley's Winter Street Garden, Miss Virginia's Mission House or Planned Parenthood. My family owns the property next to Dave's. I enjoyed listening to the jam sessions that came regularly from Dave's house. Really sorry to hear of his passing and my best to his family.

Dave was a very kind and inspiring person. I knew him from the open stage community at Toast n Jam and Firefly coffeehouses, where he shared his musical and conversational gifts freely. He was very supportive of younger musicians and artists, and his life wisdom helped to bolster my courage when I ventured away to live in NY. My condolences to his family and to the many who have enjoyed his friendship.

Dave & I sat the bench in basketball for too many CCHS games. Great memories from ski trips and a road trip to Toronto. Camping on cliffs, driving a VW wagon leaking oil, listening to Eric Clapton, doing what 2 young 18 year olds do before starting college. Somewhere in there his guitar was stolen, he bought another. Rest in peace Dave. May God bless you.

Dave was always very kind to me.
I remember he once brought me a huge bag of basil.
My whole house smelled amazing!
He was my friend.
But what I'm even more grateful for is that he was a friend to my kids. Since the day they were born.
Dave and Susie would take Nicole, and then Nicole and Olivia to Chicago each year. And that is just an example.

Dave was a staple at the Come2Go open mic nights. I helped him work the acts on and off the stage. A terrific guy and excellent musician. He will be missed.

Dave, I love the "in lieu of flowers" choices! May we all try to live mindfully and carefully and joyfully on the earth, as you did.

Dave and I were great friends growing up. He was one of the smartest guys I ever knew. We lost touch like people do, but you had a remarkable friend in Dave where you could pick up where you left off. I remember saying to him recently, that I remember him playing guitar way back when, and who knew it would be his life's work. Dave said he knew, and the rest is history. He made it count note for note. He will be missed. I am glad to have known him.

My kids and I met Dave while playing away with his Possum Trot friends at the 3 River's Co-op one evening while out on a bike ride during a very difficult time in our lives... we all got to know Dave and he helped us all through our journey. He was always warm, friendly, positive, encouraging, and uplifting... and just one heck of a good guy! We were truly blessed to have crossed paths with Dave and he will be greatly missed by many!

I am so sorry, Dave gave us so much with his music, I wish I had more to share but my love. He too will always be loved, and missed.
