DOROTHY SPONHOWER Obituary

DOROTHY M. SPONHOWER, 92, died on Monday, May 26, 2014, at DeKalb Health, Auburn. Born Nov. 10, 1921, in Butler Township, DeKalb County, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Ermina (Paulen) Miller. She married Roy E. Sponhower on Jan. 1, 1940, at Hopewell United Brethren Church. They were the first couple to be married at that church and were able to celebrate 64 years of marriage before Roy preceded her in death on March 29, 2004. She went all 12 years of school without missing a day and graduated third in her class at Spencerville High School. She worked at the Auburn Rubber Company and Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company and helped her husband on the farm. She was a member of Hopewell United Brethren Church, Jackson Township Homemakers Extension Club and she and Roy loved to travel the world together. Surviving are her daughters, Jill A. (Jack) Hoard of Spencerville, Ind., Joan A. (Carl) Benz of Couch, Mo.,and M. Jane (James) Meshberger of Linn Grove, Ind.; son, Mark E. (Janis) Sponhower of Auburn; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by two grandchildren, Rene and Todd Benz; a brother, Russell Miller; a sister, Grace Fredrick; and a son, Tim A. Sponhower. Service is 2 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2014, with calling two hours prior, at Hopewell United Brethren Church, 6852 CR 35, Auburn. Pastor John Erwin officiating. Burial in Cedar Chapel Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Youth for Christ, 1600 S. Grandstaff, Auburn, IN 46706; or Huntington University, 2303 College Ave., Huntington, IN 46750.
