JAMES KOCH Obituary

JAMES "JIM/JIMMY" CHRISTOPHER KOCH, 50, of Hoagland, Ind., passed away on Friday, Jan. 29, 2021, in Fort Wayne. Jim was born in Fort Wayne on May 28, 1970. He graduated from Harding High School and got his Bachelor's degree in Arts Education from Purdue University in Fort Wayne. Jim chose to follow his dreams and turned his love of farm windmills into a career, establishing JK Windmills in 1998. He restored, rebuilt, installed, serviced, and repaired countless farm windmills all over the Midwest United States. He also served as the Head of Maintenance and Restoration at the Mid America Windmill Museum in Kendallville, Ind., for a number of years. Jim had a true servant's heart all of his life. He was baptized in 2013 and spent his remaining years serving the Lord by serving others. He started God's Army Ministry in 2015 to meet various needs in the community. With the help of many friends along the way (God's Army!) Jim moved furniture, painted houses, fixed cars, repaired furnaces, moved appliances, tended lawns, and met so many other needs throughout the community. He faithfully served hot meals and enjoyed fellowship with friends each Saturday morning for years through the homeless ministry. Jim also served as treasurer for Gone Fishin' Prison Ministry and was a faithful volunteer and loved team member of the Hearten House Gospel Rescue Mission in Auburn, Ind. He was a much loved member of the family of Hoagland Community Church in Hoagland. Jim loved God and his family more than anything. His sense of humor was legendary. To his children he passed on a love of art, muscle cars, hockey, bonfires, Neil Young music, and camo pants. He also passed on a legacy of kindness and generosity, and a great love for life. Jim was truly a great man of God, and a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Jim is survived by the love of his life, Anne Elizabeth "Beth" (Hombach) Koch, of Fort Wayne; three sons, Jesse Koch, Darcy Koch and Wyatt Jackson, all of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Cheyney Sue Rose of Fort Wayne; parents, Michael and Teresa Koch of Fort Wayne; three brothers, Michael (Tammy Lynn) Koch of Fishers, Ind., Paul (B.G.) Koch of Plantation, Fla., and Stephen (Toni) Koch of Munster, Ind.; five nephews and three nieces, Keith (Terri) and Thomas ("Tom") (Samantha) Koch, both of Fort Wayne, Tracy Koch of Noblesville, Ind., Korey Koch of Maui, Hawaii, Kaleigh Koch of Indianapolis, Bodhi and Ranger Koch, both of Plantation, Fla., and Emily Zent, of Jacksonville, Fla.; one grand nephew and two grand nieces, Dresden and Adlynn Koch of Fayetteville, N.C., and Everly Koch of Fort Wayne; two uncles and one aunt, Frank (Gertrude) Koch of St. Catharine's, Ontario, James A. Butt, of New Haven and Rita (Butt) (Ronald) Presdorf; and many cousins. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Phyllis Price; father-in-law, Stephen Hombach; four sisters-in-law, Cindie Matuska, Christie (Roger) Price Flud, Mimi (Mark) Sams, and Shaina Hombach; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins who adored him. James was preceded in death by two aunts, Roseanne Eichman and Mary Fiorentino. Service is 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, 2021, at Fellowship Missionary Church, 2536 E. Tillman Road, Fort Wayne (IN 46816). Enter through door A. Visitation is from 1 to 4 p.m. prior to service. Masks are required and social distancing will be practiced. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made on Jim's behalf to either the Alzheimer's Association at act.alz.org; or Hearten House Gospel Rescue Mission at dciconline.org or PO Box 807, Auburn, IN, 46706.

For my friends the Koch family, the oddness of writing to you and not being able to travel to you is compounded by the fog of our current world, there are no words to express the deepest sympathies, respect and love. I met Jim over 30 years ago, and the early years of our relationship remain ingrained in me to this day as some of the best times of my life and I am better for being close to the Koch family and the Koch brothers.

The times and memories are endless, from seeing him transform 2 primer grey LeMans parts cars, into a sleek black 455 cubic inch classic car, introducing me to hockey which has been a passion since, endless nights of musical discoveries, hiding Star Wars figures in stores for later purchases, Jim's original and organic fashion sense, the stuffed shark incident, his NHL ready slap shot, countless hours of just talking (or listening to Kiss Alive II on 8-Track).

I was recently catching up with Steve, and he explained Jim's work with his church, and helping those in need, and while through new avenues, Jim was always there to help, from putting a roof on my moms house, to keeping various cars running, and to being a steady influence, Jim was never afraid to say he cared and loved you, you heard the words, and felt the emotion.

Jim, you are an original, we miss you, and hold you in our hearts. While deeply saddened, I celebrate the time we had with you.

I remember going to his house to set up for raptor rehab while volunteering for The Raptor Chapter of NE Indiana. He loved animals. He had much pride and love for his family and enjoyed life. RIP Jim, may your spirit soar with the wind that lets the Eagle fly and your windmills turn.

My condolences and prayers go out to Jim's family. I am shocked and saddened by this terrible turn of events (as are all of Jim's windmill friends). Jim's windmill knowledge and knack of sniffing out the really good ones was truly amazing.

He was a good man and i considered him my friend. It was always good to see what he was up to. He was a very passionate man and he did a lot of really neat (and sometimes unusual) things in his life. His eye for detail was a special gift. He was the guy who would spend days making something absolutely perfect when someone of lesser patience and skill would do their best and stop trying after a few hours. I remember a Halloween party he had. We had no idea what to expect but the finale was a battle between two teams in a field...he made a flag and tower for each team that represented their castle...at the end after all of the pumpkins had been tossed, a winner was declared...he had speaker hidden and it began playing this really dramatic symphonic crescendo anthem and he marched the winners to the losers tower, stripped them of their flag, set it ablaze...once the flames reached 20 or 30 feet...he tossed in the loser's flag...it was awesome !!! What a memory. I'm not sure who got more enjoyment Jim or his guests, but it was perfect. An event. He did it just to entertain us...to make his Halloween party the one i still remember 20+ years later. You will be missed Jim. The world was a better place because you walked among us !

James was always willing to help at Windmillers’ Trade Fairs, including the one we hosted in Batavia, IL, in 2012. He always greeted you with a smile and made you laugh. So glad to hear that he gave so much to his community and was so loving and loved by his family, Church and community. How sad to lose such a young, dynamic and caring person. My prayers for his family.
