JOHN CRAWFORD Obituary

JOHN N. CRAWFORD, 73, of Fort Wayne, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack while playing tennis. He was a native of New Orleans, a graduate of LSU, undergrad and medical school, and then served as Chief Resident in Radiation Oncology at the Medical College of Virginia. He took his "first job" in Fort Wayne because the building foundation had been dug and he never left the community he learned to love. His respect and love for every patient was returned in kind for which he was grateful. Friends and family relied on his intellect for second opinions. He, Deep Bajpai, Prasad Mantravadi and Jim Gates grew a team of radiation oncologists respected throughout the country. He was known as a civil servant but was most especially proud of responding to any and every concern a city constituent voiced. He was never too busy to listen. People always found him generous with his time and treasure. His family is relieved to say he finally bagged that 10' bear in Alaska this year. While he hated air travel hassles, John traveled the globe - always in coach - and led a full, adventurous life. He even admitted that Palm Beach was "pretty nice". He felt he had mastered gardening and had acquired the skill of correcting crossword puzzles done in ink. He enjoyed "Good Guys at Sunrise", original Star Trek, Dilbert comics and Pinwheels. He was planning on one more City Council run which his family discouraged at every turn. His most proud accomplishment in life, he often said, was his son Grant. Along with his son, his beloved wife, Marcia M. Crawford, survives. Both will miss his sharp wit. He also leaves behind his mother-in-law, Helen Mitson; brother-in-law, Chris (Susan) Mitson; nephews, Ozzie (Christina) Mitson, Tony Mitson, and Mickey (Kara) Mitson; great niece, Elena Mitson; and great nephew, Christoper Mitson. Additionally, CousCous, his therapy cat lives. He was preceded in death by parents, John and Meddie Crawford; his beloved sibling, Sis; and his father-in-law, Oscar Mitson. He was leading in the tennis match. A celebration of life is from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, July 22, 2022, at Memorial Coliseum. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hoosiers Feeding The Hungry, Wellspring food bank or Questa Education Foundation would be appreciated.

It´s hard to believe a year has gone by already. It´s my hope that his family has found peace.
Dr. Crawford was my cancer doctor and I sincerely miss him. I have not been comfortable with the Dr who took over on my care, (my follow ups) and I probably annoy my current doctor by demanding they do the same as Dr. Crawford did when it comes to monitoring my yearly checkups. But that´s ok, I trusted Dr. Crawford and was very comfortable with his care and reasons, so I expect the same from my current doctor.
Rest in Peace, Dr Crawford... a good man taken from the world way too soon.

It's hard to believe it's been a year since Dr. Crawford passed from this world. His connection to Fort Wayne through his work on City Council and his contribution to patients over many years as senior partner at Radiation Oncology Associates keeps his spirit alive in all our hearts. He inspired so many. It was an honor to work with him. Remembering you Marcia and Grant and wishing you comfort on this day and the days ahead.

I just heard that John had passed. Although we only met him a few times, while out hunting in Howe behind my parents house, he was such a wonderful guy. You could tell he had a zest for life and adventure. He showed great enthusiasm in my son's buck and overall hunt. He will be missed. RIP backyard neighbor. All of our condolences to you and your family. GOD bless.

Doctor was the kindest to me and my family. I have been his patient since I was 19. Even when I was "out of the woods" 25 years later he still saw me every year to give me that reassurance. Dr Crawford always reminded me I was a survivor even when I didn't consider myself one. He calmed me as soon as he entered the room and always without fail asked about my family. I will miss him terribly and thank the Lord he saved my life. Doctor Crawford, say hi to my mom up there and enjoy the endless happiness, you truly deserve it.

John was always a delight to be around. Positive, energetic, and intellectual with a unique style all his own. Everyone appreciated him. He was a highly respected physician, politician, and tennis player. I always looked forward to playing him at his fabulous private tennis facility. So did my Dad, his best friend. We will truly miss John. So special. A masterful human being for sure.

John was witty, kind, brilliant and generous with his time. The City was fortunate to have such an intellect on City Council. So lucky to have been able to know him through tennis and as part of the extended Macedonian family. Will forever miss him.

Like so many of us we are deeply saddened to hear this. I sure am glad to hear he got his 10´ bear! While helping John with his campaigns I was privileged to get the chance to know John and Marcia. I enjoyed seeing the pictures of all the wild life animals and seeing how proud he was. Not just that, he helped w some talks when my mother passed with cancer and I cannot thank you enough for that. Marcia and family you are in our thoughts and prayers. May God be with you all and guide you through this time.

Marcia and Grant, I´m so very sorry for your loss. So many people will remember Dr Crawford with fondness and respect. Marcia, the memory I hold most special is when you and John spent Christmas Eve with Dave, Andy, and me in 1988. One of the best gifts anyone could have given us.

Sending Marcia and family my heartfelt condolences. I have no doubts John was leading in that match.

John was very kind, and as described, was always lending a listening ear and had very good advice.

He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

I only beat John once in tennis, it was on his first visit to Fort Wayne to interview for a position with Ft. Wayne Radiology.
I once asked him about that "defeat" and his response
"I really wanted that job!"
