Philip Carson Obituary

Philip Lynn Carson, of Carmel, IN, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2024, in Zionsville, IN. He was 81 years young. Phil spent his final days in home hospice care after suffering a massive stroke. He was surrounded by his wife of 60 years, Susan Weeks Carson, his three daughters and sons-in-law: Diana and Matt Chapman, Julie and Brad Morrow, and Peggy and Skip Hart. He was blessed to be attended by all of his grandchildren: Macy Chapman, Quinton Morrow, Carson Chapman, Meg (Morrow) and Graham Thomason, Jack Carson, Abigail Morrow, Luke Hellman and Lillian Hart.

Phil was a devoted family man. His family always knew he would be home every night for dinner to discuss the day's events even with a very busy legal practice. "Coach Carson" was on the field, summer after summer, coaching all three of his daughter's softball teams. He was present at every major event for his children and grandchildren. Each of his grandchildren would say that "Papa" was one of the most influential people in their lives.

Upon graduating DePauw University and the Indiana University School of Law, Phil went to work for Livingston, Dildine, Haynie, and Yoder in Ft. Wayne, IN. His colleagues say he was a brilliant attorney and knew the law better than anyone. The law firm was re-named Carson LLP in honor of his superior reputation, hard work ethic, and achievements.

Phil so enjoyed being physically active and in shape. You would see him pumping iron at the gym, playing tennis, gardening and rolling bocce ball later in his life. Travel was another great passion for Phil. He and Susan visited ninety-seven countries and their travel tales were a delight for all to hear. Perhaps the greatest hobby that Phil loved was increasing his knowledge via his avid reading. He spent countless hours devouring one book after another with a particular fondness for world history and detective novels.

Finally, Phil was a fierce competitor and a card shark. He loved playing and winning bridge which he did a lot! On the night of Phil's passing his grandsons dealt Phil in on their poker game. Phil's hand was victorious three hands in a row with all hearts. The odds of this happening were 1 in 628,414,113.

May Phil's heart and magic continue to bless us all.

A virtual memorial service is scheduled for Sunday January 28th at 4:00 P.M. E.S.T.
