RICHARD FORD Obituary

RICHARD EDWIN FORD, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014, in Naples, Fla. where he was visiting friends. He devoted much of his life to volunteerism and philanthropic endeavors. He was the fourth-generation of a pioneer Wabash family. Born Feb. 27, 1939, he was the son of Wilbur and Florence (Jeup) Ford and had lived most of his life in the family home at 540 North Wabash. He graduated from Wabash High School with the Class of 1956 and attended Indiana University where he was a member of Acacia fraternity. Upon graduation with a BS degree in business, he joined the family firm, The Ford Meter Box, Inc., as a salesman in the East. He was living then in Washington, D.C. where he eventually worked for the Environmental Protection Agency and for a not-for-profit organization until he returned to Wabash in 1980. It was at that time that he took up a number of civic causes involving the arts, historic preservation and the humanities. His efforts in these fields were local, national, and international in scope. After his return home, he chaired the Ford Meter Box Foundation and was for many years a member of the board of directors of the Ford Meter Box Company. In Wabash, he established the Charley Creek Foundation, an organization which created the Charley Creek Gardens on North Miami St. and sponsors the Charley Creek Artsfest, an annual event featuring art exhibits, art sales and music performances. The Foundation is home to the Wabass Institute, the world's first workshop devoted to players of the double bass string instrument. Instructors and students gather each year in Wabash to study and to perform. His growing interest in historic preservation took him to various towns and cities in the United States and Europe where he saw preservation efforts at work. He became involved in projects to save the city of Venice, Italy, from flooding and he was on the board of directors of the American Museum in Britain. In America, he served as president of the Council of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. He was a life member of the Honeywell Foundation, where his father, Wilbur Ford, was president for many years. The Olivette Room and the Tower Room were among his projects at the Honeywell Center. He was a major force behind the creation of The Wabash County Historical Museum at 36 East Market. At the same time the new museum project was underway, he was also developing the Dr. James Ford Historic Home on West Hill Street. Dr. Ford, Richard's great-grandfather lived and practiced medicine in the home that is now a small museum. He was a past member of the Honeywell House board where he took an interest in programming and in maintain the house to the late Eugenia Honeywell's strict standards. The major project of Mr. Ford's later years was the restoration of the Hotel Indiana, which he renamed the Charley Creek Inn. He created a charming small hotel with a dining room and lounge in downtown Wabash. He was pleased with the role that Charley Creek Inn had played in the revitalization of the downtown area. His interest in history and historic preservation was matched only by his interest in music. Over the years, he was quietly responsible for bringing talented musicians to Wabash. He was on the board of directors of the Wabash Valley Music Association, and had served as its president. He was a board member of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and of the National Council of the Metropolitan Opera. For several years, he served as director of the Metropolitan's Indiana regional auditions. It was his interest in music that provided him with strong ties to Indiana University after he graduated. He supported many causes at the Jacobs School of Music on the Bloomington campus. He developed an interest in cabaret music and in the popular music segment known as The Great American Songbook, and he was particularly fond of the music of Cole Porter and Hoagy Carmichael. Richard was the recipient of awards from many organizations, but none pleased him more than those from Indiana groups. Among those were the 1998 Distinguished Citizen award from the Wabash Chamber of Commerce, the 2004 Indiana Living Legends award from the Indiana Historical Society, and the 2009 "Spirit of the Prairie " award from Conner Prairie. Indiana Landmarks honored him with the Cook Cup for his preservation efforts in restoring what is now Charley Creek Inn. Manchester College (now Manchester University) granted him the honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters in 2005. He was past president of the American Pianists Association. He was on the board of Heartland Film Festival, Dance Kaleidoscope and the Indianapolis Opera Company. He sat on the boards of the Hoosier Salon, the Indiana State Historical Society, and the Indianapolis International Violin Competition. Two governors named him a Sagamore of the Wabash. His club and organization affiliations were numerous. In Wabash, he belonged to the Kiwanis Club, the Wabash Chamber of Commerce, and more than three dozen other local organizations. He was a member of First Methodist Church. He is survived by nephews, Steven (Lisa) Ford, Daniel (Tammy) Ford and Mark (Amy) Ford, all of Wabash; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Ford of Wabash. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister. Memorial services are planned for a later time. Arrangements by Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Ave., Wabash, IN 46992.

Richard was a generous supporter of the restoration of President Lincoln's Cottage in Washington, DC, and remained a loyal annual donor for years. In doing so, he helped thousands of visitors appreciate American history and explore Lincoln's thoughts on freedom and equality. We are grateful to have had Richard's support and encouragement, and are deeply saddened to learn of his passing. Reading this guestbook, it is clear that Richard had a profound impact not just here, but in Wabash and around the world. Our thoughts are with his family.

Here it is the middle of July 2014 and I have just learned of Dick Ford's death
through the Acacia Fraternity Indiana website the creators and maintainers of which I thank sincerely because I would not have known of it otherwise.
Dick came to my wedding and I visited
his lake cottage and rode in his boat.
At Indiana university I remember having
a lot of meals with him at Acacia Fraternity and how he loved baked potatoes and sour cream!
Also, he liked Broadway Musicals
as a university student, especially "Gypsy" and we would act out the "Curtain Up, Light the Lights" part with me dancing in the fraternity living room and him on the light switch on the wall for the chandelier.
Most of my memories of Dick are of that fraternity experience and he made
it very enjoyable for us all. A kind
fellow, a very intelligent one and a cultured one.
He went on to much bigger accomplishments and experiences. His loss is deeply felt by me. I am in deep grief.

Having just learned of Mr. Ford's passing, I could not be more sad. I have known Mr. Ford from my days at The Columbia Club in Indianapolis and was so surprised to see him here in Washington DC at The University Club, where I worked. Always the gentleman, Mr. Ford made me feel more of a friend than a staff member of his club. Such a wonderful philanthropist, human being and all around down to earth guy, I will miss you. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. God Bless

Richard was a friend, a lover of music and supporter of the arts in so many ways. He hosted me and my husband in recitals in Indiana and we tried to get together when he was in Washington. I have just heard of his death and am speechless, and very sad. Yes, my friend, rest in peace!

When Richard joined me on the Board of the American Museum in Britain he invited me to lunch in New York in order to get to know me better and learn more about our institution. When I walked into Cipriani at the Sherry-Netherland Richard was sitting at their finest table. Throughout lunch a steady stream of Richard's friends and admirers stopped by our table to say hello or pay their respects. I was in awe that a man from Wabash knew so many people who clearly respected and admired him. We were sitting next to Isiah Thomas who was then running the New York Knicks and Isiah was clearly wondering who was this famous person who he did not know. Thereafter, I was fortunate to get to know Richard for the truly remarkable man that he was. I was privileged to know him and I shall miss him.

Lovely man who enjoyed music, the American museum in Bath and shared with us the wonderful wine and food of the Connaught. I was pleased to have been able to visit with my wife Geraldine who introduced me to Wabash and Culver last week which was filled with hers and her daughters many memories of Richard. Pleased meet Steve and see the various monuments Richard and Ginny left to Wasbash particularly Charlie's Creek Hotel with its exquisite Ginny art collection done with the great style and grace which Richard lived. God speed and enjoy your music this Friday.

I met Richard in 1976 when he became a firm friend of our family. My father Ron Nield held Richard in the highest esteem and we always had great fun meeting at various arts events. My favorite moment was when we saw The Blue Man Group off, off, off Broadway. Richard wearing a poncho over his suit in the theater will remain with me for a long time and always makes me smile.

Richard Ford was an amazing human being. His depth, his love for his home town, his generosity, his humbleness, his friendliness and his ability to relate to whom ever he met are a few of the many qualities that made Richard one of the most outstanding individuals that I have had the pleasure to know.
The last time I was in Wabash he took the time to drive me around the city pointing out the places and the projects he was planning. Detailing that this tree had to be saved and that the river area would be a great attraction once the project was completed. An individual who was of quiet manner so that very few know the extent of his influence and contributions to not only Wabash but also to the Arts, the State and the Nation.
Aloha Richard Ford: you will be sorely missed by many.

Being a much younger member of Acacia at IU, I met Richard as an undergrad as he was always so supportive of Acacia, both on the local Chapter level and on the International level through his support of the Acacia Fraternity Foundation. Little did I know then that as an adult our lives would cross many times through his love of music, and my career in music. He set a stellar example in his life of taking a more active part in the affairs of the communities in which he resided. Something we all should aspire to... His was a life well lived. R.I.P. Richard!

Richard Ford was an amazing and very generous person who touched so many lives but he touched mine in a very special way. Richard Ford was my Godfather and he was the BEST Godfather a girl could ever wish for.

Uncle Rich, as I called him, made me feel so special. He brought me to Culver Academy for summer horseback riding camp and would insist on inviting all of my new camp friends over to the lake cottage for a day of boating and hanging out. When Uncle Rich would travel to DC, he would take me to Debutante Cotillion parties and lots of other social events he was attending in the Washington, DC area.

One of my favorite memories was attending the Inaugural Ball of President George H. W. Bush as his escort. We had so much fun together and he always made me smile. After I got married and had 2 daughters, he would continue to invite us to Culver or Wabash to visit him during the summers. My girls loved his electric boat (but I personally always loved the speed of the Riva!). During our visits to Wabash we all had fun going around in his golf cart and seeing all of the beautiful work he had done to the Wabash homes and gardens and enjoying wonderful dinners out on the terrace.

This world won't quite be the same without the enormously generous and unselfish Uncle Rich. However, I know in my heart he will continue to give to us all from heaven. Until we meet again, “cheers” Uncle Rich and enjoy those vodka tonics in heaven. ?

Much Love,
Your God-Daughter, Kirk Morgan Hammock

The loss of a very dear friend is being felt in the hearts of our entire family. Richard, Ginny and Dick first met in 1963 when Dick was a young Lieutenant Junior Grade in the Navy. The relationship was an instant bond. It expanded over the years to include Caryl meeting Richard at our wedding in 1965 then the births of our two daughters, Beth and Kirk, whom Richard became the Godfather of our youngest daughter, Kirk. Richard brought both daughters out at the Washington Debutante Cotillion and attended both daughters' weddings and personally got to know all four grand children, Richard, Caroline, Morgan and Taylor. Some of the highlights of the 70's 80's and 90's were all the summers spent at Culver with one daughter, Kirk, attending the Riding School there for many years. Many fun times were spent on the lake with family and friends and traveling back and forth to Wabash to see the restored homes, gardens, Charley Creek Inn and museum which Richard was so proud to show and tell stories of the Ford family history.

Richard, dear friend, until we meet you in heaven, our hearts will continue to be full with all your love and the memories you bestowed upon our family.

Richard brought people together from all walks of life and entertained with grace, class, and a great deal of humor (if you could catch him off to the side when he wasn't watching his guests attentively). He was a complex person and his love of history and music benefitted all.

With Richard Ford at Weill Hall in NYC. He was such a wonderful patron and lover of the arts. He will be sorely missed.

Richard Ford was a friend and a devoted supporter of my Deeper Piano Studies Workshops. He was the catalyst for the program offering me the opportunity in 2000 to create a workshop for pianists. He had the idea that there would be pianos playing all around his house and property - I surprised him with a program where almost no piano playing happened, and the pianists learned music without practicing, did a lot of cooking, played games and had discussion groups. Nevertheless, he supported the program by hosting and funding the workshops every year, even when he found his health failing him in the last 2 years. A few times, he added to the workshops by attending the home-made dinners prepared by the participants, and contributing his thoughts on table etiquette!
I will miss his dry humor and delicate manners. And Wabash and Indiana will surely miss him.

This is truly the end of an incredible era. Not only was Richard a 'friend' to the arts, he nurtured organizations that later transformed the Indianapolis landscape. I was one of those people he helped more than 30 years ago. He was a good and loyal friend. He will truly be missed.

I have known Richard only these past two decades, but I have known him to be an exceptional human being. Everything he touched was made better by his work. Though he has now been removed from our material senses, I am confident that his talents are not going to be wasted. There is much work in this great cosmos to be done. To the Great Ones, this work is play, and a labor of love. Richard, your eternal journey continues; nothing is lost on this journey, save our limitations. Walk with God and keep in step with the Universe.

Cousin Rich was my grandfather's cousin. He graciously opened his homes to our large (and ever growing) family in the summers to keep the Fords connected to each other, our family history, and the original home of many Fords – Wabash. Growing up, I knew I had a special family. I delighted in visiting with relatives from all over the country & world, and Richard's efforts made that possible. I have many fond childhood memories of his lake home, and I have enjoyed watching my children make their own memories at the homes on Wabash Street. Every reunion summer, we enjoy seeing the results of his civic and foundation work—the historical museum, Dr. James Ford House, Charlie Creek Inn, the gardens and more. I was touched by the beautifully written obituary, and I know the reach of his generosity extends far beyond. I send lots of love and peace to Marilyn, Dan & Tammy, Mark & Amy, Steve & Lisa and their children.

Richard was a driving force behind many, many organizations that contribute to the quality of life in Indiana. I knew him via the Honeywell House and my work with it when I was with the IU Foundation. Richard, and his sister Ginny, always maintained a keen interest in the House and its continued operation as a treasured community asset, and he took special interest in restoring it as well as serving as Board Chair for many years. You shall be missed greatly, Richard, by your numerous friends in Wabash, at IU, and around the State. We have all been blessed by your presence in our lives.

I met Richard courtesy of Carol Rogers and my brother Davies Reed, and was enchanted over two rides on his electric boat on Lake Maxinkuckee. The special kinship I felt with him owing to the Ford Meter Box in my front yard in Arlington, VA is likely felt by hundreds of others whose lives he improved through his support of the Arts. May he rest in eternal peace.

I have known Richard since I moved in across the street from him in 1984. Besides our church affiliation, we shared a love of music, and he was so generous in offering me many opportunities to listen to guest musicians at his home, where he was always the gracious host with the sly grin. I enjoyed his subtle sense of humor and gentle way with everyone. I will miss him, but I know he's been reunited with those who went before.

I met Richie at Culver probably in the summer of 1945 when we rented the Smith cottage at Culver next to Ford's. I was 3. He was always like a big brother to me. He was Dick by the time I got to ACACIA and he was my fraternity father. Afterwards he became Richard to many friends, which he collected worldwide. He made this world a better place all his life.
