RUTH SMITH Obituary

RUTH M. SMITH, 98, passed away in her sleep on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2022. She lived in Harlan, Ind., before moving to Cedar Park, Texas. Ruth was born in Unity, Pa., and grew up in Vander grift, Pa. After graduating from high school, she attended business school then worked in civil service in Washington, D.C. Being adventurous and wanting to see more of the world, she moved to New York City for two years. It was during World War II so she and her high school girlfriend then decided to enlist in the military. Ruth served in the U.S. Coast Guard for three years and was stationed in Washington, D.C., where she met and married her husband of 71 years, Bill Smith who preceded her in death. They had two daughters, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Her favorite activities were cooking, gardening and canning. She was an avid reader and followed politics closely. She worked 20 years at Lincoln Life Insurance and became an underwriter. Ruth was an active member of the Harlan United Methodist Church; she enjoyed participating in Bible studies. When remembering her life and the things she did and accomplished, she would say, "I've had a great life!" Memorial service is 11 a.m. Saturday, April 2, 2022, at Harlan United Methodist Church, with visitation one hour before. Ruth will be buried with her late husband at Montgomery Cemetery in Oakland City, Ind. Arrangements by Weed-Corley-Fish Leander Funeral Home.
