William Borgmann Obituary

WILLIAM F. BORGMANN, 90, of Savannah, Ga., formerly of Fort Wayne, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2003 at the Spanish Oaks Retreat in Savannah. Bill was the only child of Walter and Pauline (Doenges) Borgmann. He lived in Fort Wayne all of his life until his retirement, at which time he moved to Savannah. In Fort Wayne he attended North Side High School where he played football and basketball and received the Guild Trophy on graduation, as the scholar-athlete of the year. He was graduated from the University of Michigan where he played guard on the football team in 1932, 1933, and 1934. In 1933 he played on the national championship team. He was graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1938 with an LLB degree. He spent three years in Europe during WWII where he received a battlefield commission. On his return he worked for the Lincoln National Life Insurance Company and later for Central Soya Company until his retirement in 1978. He was active in his church serving on its council and also as an avocation, he officiated football for 20 years in the Big Ten. He was a Rotarian where he served as past president and past District Governor; president of the Caldron Club; City Plan Commission and Quest Club. In Savannah he has been a Rotarian, a member of the Volunteer Fire Department, a 25-year member of The Landings Club and a member of its Board of Directors of the Landings Association. He was the father of four children, grandfather of nine and great-grandfather of two. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen Louise Borgmann, of Savannah, Ga.; daughter, Suellen B. Craig, Stamford, Conn.; sons and daughters-in-law, William F. Borgmann, Jr., Daniel J. (Lisa Blosser) Borgmann, both of Fort Wayne, Thomas A. (Dawn) Borgmann, Wadsworth, Ohio; grandchildren, Jennifer Olsen, Matthew Wood, Amy Davis, Ryan Borgmann, Erin Dawn Borgmann, Brandon Borgmann, Andrew Borgmann, Catherine Borgmann and Michael Borgmann; great-grandsons, Andrew Olsen and Kyle Olsen. Memorial services will be held Friday at 4 p.m. Trinity English Lutheran Church, 405 West Wayne Street, Fort Wayne. Arrangements by Fox & Weeks Hodgson Memorial Chapel, Savannah.
