Alfred Catalfo Obituary

GATLINBURG, Tenn. - Attorney Alfred Catalfo, Jr., 99, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 14, 2016, in Sevierville, Tenn. He was a respected trial lawyer, longtime member of the Dover community, and a legend.

He was born on January 31, 1917, in Lawrence, Mass., the son of Alfio and Vincenza (Amato) Catalfo.

He leaves his wife and companion of 44 years, Attorney Gail Varney Catalfo, of Gatlinburg, Tenn. He was predeceased in 1968 by his first wife, Caroline Mosca Catalfo, the mother of his three beloved children, Attorney Alfred T. Catalfo, III, of Dover; Attorney Carole J. Catalfo of Louisville, Ky.; and Dr. Gina Mireault and her husband, Dr. Jay Mireault, of Waterbury Center, Vt. He leaves four grandchildren, Gina Catalfo Nelson and her husband, Derek Nelson, of Dover; Alfred (Freddie) R.T. Catalfo, IV, of Dover; Alfred (Al) Mireault of San Francisco, Calif.; and Carolynn (Lynn) Mireault of New York City. Survivors include his beloved sister-in-law, Patricia Catalfo, sister Frances Morang, mother-in-law Jeanette Varney, Donna Labrie Hunt, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Joseph Catalfo, Salvatore (Sam) Catalfo, Mary Gilbert and Ida McClendon.

Fred's first language was Italian. Upon completing the eighth grade, he worked in a mill full-time for five years to help support his family. He could not speak English well until he entered high school at the age of 19 but eventually became editor of the school newspaper. He graduated from Berwick Academy in 1940 and attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Despite never having been out of New England, he was elected University of Alabama Freshman Class President. He was a member of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team. Although the smallest member of the team, he made up for it with heart and determination, which he displayed in all aspects of his life.

He served his country as a U.S. Navy pilot in World War II, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. During his service, he was in a plane crash which left him on the critical list for eleven days, then in an arm and body cast for nine months. He was a World War II 100% service-connected Disabled American Veteran. Fred has been a member of the New Hampshire Disabled American Veterans for 72 years where he served as Department Commander and as Judge Advocate, a position he held for over 60 years until his death. He leaves his beloved brothers and sisters of the New Hampshire D.A.V. and Auxiliary.

Following World War II, Fred graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a B.A. Degree in History. He then entered Boston University School of Law where he completed the three-year curriculum in two years, graduated, and was sworn in to the New Hampshire Bar in 1947. He remained a member of the New Hampshire Bar until his death and was also admitted to the Tennessee Bar at age 91. While practicing law, he obtained a Master's Degree in History from U.N.H., writing "The History of the Town of Rollinsford" as his Master's thesis.

He practiced law for 59 years, well into his eighties, the last 15 of those with his wife and son. Fred's commanding and colorful presence in the courtroom, his trial skills, and his mentorship of other attorneys are legendary.

Fred loved politics. He was elected Strafford County Attorney for two terms and served as State Chairman of the Democratic Party where he helped elect his good friend, John F. Kennedy, as President of the United States. He was a Kennedy delegate to the 1960 Democratic Convention in Los Angeles. In 1962, he was Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate.

He served as aide-de-camp to three New Hampshire Governors and entertained many prominent presidential candidates in his Dover home.

In 2006, he moved to Gatlinburg, Tenn., in the Great Smoky Mountains, where he wrote his autobiography, "Undefeated, Scored On Once," published in 2014. The title has a dual meaning: As head coach of the Berwick Academy football team while he was a college student, he coached the team to an "undefeated, scored-on-once" season; and, following his plane crash in World War II, he successfully challenged a surgeon who wanted to amputate his arm. He had just completed a second book yet to be published about his legal career.

He was a member of numerous organizations over the years including American Legion Post 8, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 5, Knights of Columbus, Loyal Order of Moose, Dover Elks and the Navy League of America.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

ToGail, Freddie, Carol, and Gina, please forgive me if the order of birth is incorrect. I have never forgotten you, and of course Fred, when together with my husband Roland, and son Roger, who was all of two, at the time visited my sister Margaret at your home. Roger is now a marketing specialist executive with a beautiful wife, Amy, and 2 amazing sons, Brayden 7, and Alex 3 residing in Georgia.

That visit was such a delight that I would continue to ask Margaret about every body from time to time.

Every body was so welcoming! And Carol, or maybe it was Gina who loved horses so much that you had several toy horses that proved to be a special attraction for Roger. So much so, that you let him have a small one, that had become his constant companion, when we left. Maybe, you guys might recall that for some reason, no one could figure out, he would call the horses, or maybe that one, "Obi," no matter how many times, he would be told it was "Horse."

May I take this opportunity, first of all to give all of you, our condolences on the passing of such an estimable man, in so many sterling ways, Fred Catalfo.

And then to say, thank you, Fred notwithstanding, for your wonderful kindness to me, and my family then.

Everyone's faces have been etched in my memory, ever since that visit. And I am just so proud of all your individual accomplishments. Way to go, Gail!

Love, and God's blessings always!

Joy.

A larger than life person, who enlivened the practice of law and served as an inspiration for all veterans, disabled or not. He added color to the otherwise colorless landscape of the practice of law in Strafford County and the State of New Hampshire. He will be long remembered by all who knew him.

To Carol,Gina,Freddie Gail,Jan,and the entire Catalfo Family.
Your dad was such an inspiration in my life. The opportunities he gave me politically and socially in everyday life has molded me to be a better individual in working with families and children. I base my success on my own dads support and knowledge and your dads additional input in making me a better community member in Strafford County. I am saddened by your loss and my personal loss and I am grateful for the knowledge I gained in knowing your dad as an idol in the community and a political representative. He welcomed all of us and instilled in us the values of family and friendship. I often hear the echo of keys opening the door at the big white house on 20 Arch St. and his saying in a loud voice,"are you kids all right" and we were. It was a comfort. I'll always remember his famous Italian soup and his occasional KFC festivous bringing all of us to the round table and asking us what we were doing and what our plans were for the future. He will always be fondly remembered in my heart and soul and I will always remember to be the best that I can be and to be a political affiliate throughout Strafford County. Rest in peace Fred and carry on in the heavens and sit by those who knew you, cared about your input, and loved you. For eternity.

It is so coincidental that I was recently speaking with my husband about Attorney Cataldo and his home in Dover, NH. The conversation made me smile.
