Claire Hoorn Obituary
Claire immigrated to the U.S. in 1982 and immediately began cultivating a large community of friends who remained close to this day. Claire had an adventurous spirit, she traveled the world and liked to explore nature. Claire was involved in many sports including skiing, golfing, and tennis. She was also a yoga instructor for the past 25 years. Her biggest passion, however, may have been finding ways to introduce those things to her family and countless friends.
She was preceded by her husband (Jan) of 45 years and her parents.
She is survived by her two sons, Bastiaan van Hoorn of Portland, Ore., and Mark van Hoorn of Park City, Utah; her brother Melis and her sisters Ria, Lia, and Irene.
There will be no traditional funeral services held at this time. Family and friends will plan several small celebrations of life in her honor.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made in Claire's name to On Belay, a nonprofit organization for children of family members suffering from cancer (www.on-belay.org.).

Bastiaan and Mark, your mom was my client for over thirty years. Every six weeks we would share updates on our families-happy, sad, funny and all of them had you two as the main focus. She loved you fiercely and was devoted to you both. She was my dear friend as well as a client and I am profoundly saddened by her loss. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy at the loss of such a wonderful woman.

Bastiaan en Mark,
I first got to know your mom when you both were very small and lived in Madbury. Someone contacted me to tell me there was a Dutch woman in town who was looking for someone who could speak Dutch. We connected and it turned out she had two small children and she wanted them to hear Dutch as much as possible. So I came over and we had coffee and conversation every week, I think until you all went off to school. While our visits were not so regular after that I saw her at ORMS and later on at her weekly yoga classes. I did not see her often in recent years. When we did see each other, as in Wentworth Greenhouses, the conversation was always a good and long one. Such a wonderful, funny and caring person she was. I will treasure my memories of her. My heart is with you offering comfort. I wish I had better words. Met liefde en medeleven.

Clair was er altijd voor mij en Gijs.
Ik denk nog met plezier terug aan de vakantie bij jullie toen ik 50 werd.

Dear Bastiaan and Mark, our sincere condolences with the loss of your mother.
We think of Claire often and remember many great visits we had with you all in Durham.
Claire always made us feel most welcome with her warm laugh and caring hospitality, the trips in the Van, you guys racing around on your bikes in the basement and the realy good dinners and stories we shared. She will be greatly missed and we hope that her love for you both will give you the strength to bear the grief of her passing.

heb altijd goede herinneringen aan haar,o.a. aan de beurs in munchen
alwaar ze mij op mijn stand assisteerde.de avonden daar werden afgesloten met het lied: und dann gehen die lichten aus.

Claire thank you for being a friend for more than 50 years, playing fieldhockey and tennis in the same club, spent a lot of holidays together as well as in Europe, Africa and the USA.

I met your parents in the early nineties when they were travelling with very good friends of mine, namely Nico and Annelies Claassen through South Africa and stayed with us for a number of days and all keenly following the progress of Holland in the World Cup. Vivacious, fun, thoughtful... loved swishing down the slopes at Gunstock with her and meeting up for lunch at the upper lodge! All that yoga keeping her agile on ski is and on the golf course. Het was een grote schok voor ons het nieuws van haar overlijden te horen.
Wij kenden elkaar vanaf de jaren 1965. Hockey, studie, vakantie.

I always enjoyed having conversations with Claire and playing golf with her. She was such an adventurer and enjoyed her travels so much. She was taken from this earth way too soon, and she will be missed by many. RIP sweet Claire, and to her sons and family my very deepest sympathy.

Lieve tante Claire, dankjewel voor de logeer partijen toen we nog jong waren in Tilburg. En jullie bezoek in Kennebunk, toen ik me daar zo alleen voelde, was ik blij dat jij en oom Jan langs kwamen. Bastiaan and Mark - We are very sorry to learn of your mom's passing. We always enjoyed her company at Cocheco CC when we were all members there. We saw her around the area through the years after that and she remained a warm, friendly person to catch up with. She always had a new adventure to share!
