Daniel LaPoint Obituary

DURHAM, Maine ; Daniel T. C. LaPoint died October 7, 2008.

Born March 7, 1949, in Berlin, N.H., Dan grew up in Dover, N.H. The oldest of seven children, Dan married his high school sweetheart, Brenda LaPoint, in a sunrise ceremony at the top of Mount Agamenticus in York, Maine. As a professional land surveyor in the state of Maine, Dan was known for his honesty, problem-solving skills, and for bartering survey work for everything from a live pig to a handmade quilt. Surveying suited Dan's love of nature; he was always at home in the fields, the woods, in his own garden or tending his bees.

Dan's friends and family were his life. He cherished his wife, daughters and granddaughter, brothers, sisters and parents. Family members always looked forward to Dan's handmade birthday cards, each featuring an original handwritten poem. Dan had many close friends from all parts of his life, including Plymouth State College, TKE fraternity, Mud Football and annual 3-3-3 Loon Mountain ski trips. A true individual, Dan lived to his own principles, getting enjoyment from the simple things in life. Everyone whose life he touched will remember how easy it was to get caught up in his spontaneity, creativity, free spirit and dry sense of humor.

Surviving are his wife, Brenda, of Durham; daughter, Amy Kenly and husband, Stewart; daughter, Katie Shelley and husband, Brad; daughter, Celina Dutremble and husband, Don; grandchild, Alanah Joy; mother, Elizabeth Praino LaPoint of Dover; brother, Michael and wife, Janet Lapoint of Rollinsford.; sister, Patricia and husband, Harold Clark, of Dover; sister, Annmarie and husband, Michael Greenberg, of Manchester, Conn.; brother, Steven and wife, Teresa Lapoint, of Somersworth; sister, Jean and husband, Stephen, of Barrington. Also surviving are his many nieces and nephews who adored him and looked forward to annual Winterfest gatherings each year.

He was predeceased by his father, Philip S. LaPoint, and his sister, Elizabeth R. LaPoint, both of Dover.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Maine Public Radio in Dan's name at 63 Texas Ave., Bangor, ME 04401 or http://www.mpbn.net/support/index.html. Dan was an avid Maine Public Radio listener.

A visitation period will be held on Friday, Oct. 10 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Wilson Funeral Home in Gray, Maine. Ashes will be scattered next spring at the Burr Cemetery in Freeport.

Arrangements entrusted to Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.

Andrea and send our sympathies to all of Danny's family. We both have happy high school memories of Danny's vibrant love of a good time. Andrea was his co-worker as a lifeguard at the Country Club and I spent happy days hiking and camping with Danny as a "sort of' Boy Scout" through the sixties. We remember him fondly and hope that your happy memories will comfort you in the future.
