POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. ; Elizabeth "Betty" Marie Puff Long, 89, a lifelong Poughkeepsie resident, died Saturday, April 11, 2009, at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie.
Born in Poughkeepsie on March 27, 1920, she was the daughter of Clarence A. and Adelia Wigg Puff. Betty was employed as a nurse/teacher for many years for the City of Poughkeepsie School District before retiring in 1982.
Betty received a bachelor of arts degree from Vassar College, a master of science degree from Russell Sage College and graduated from the Vassar Brothers Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse, where she taught nursing. She was a member of the Vassar College Alumnae Association; Poughkeepsie area Vassar Club; Dutchess County Retired Teachers Association State and National Retired Teachers Association; former member of City of Poughkeepsie Narcotics Guidance Council; former member of A.A.U.W.; a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, a longtime member of Christ Episcopal Church in Poughkeepsie and served as a U.S. Army Corps. Cadet Nurse during World War II at Rhodes Army Hospital in Utica, N.Y.
She is survived by two sons, G. Winston Long Jr. of Poughkeepsie, David C. and his wife, Bonnie Varney Long of Dover, N.H., and a granddaughter, Vanessa G. Long of Kittery, Maine.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday, April 15 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Parmele-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Ave., Poughkeepsie, N.Y. A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced at Christ Episcopal Church in Poughkeepsie. Burial will take place in the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
