Evelyn C. Dennis

LEE - Evelyn C. Dennis, born January 20, 1927, passed away at the Hyder House Hospice on Friday, January 19, 2018. She was born in Fairlee, Vt., daughter of Charles A. Clark and Ida Mae Clark.

She went to school in Fairlee, Vt. and then to high school in Orford, N.H. In 1946 she married Wallace Dennis of Orford, N.H. In the fall of 1946 they moved to Durham, N.H., where Wallace entered the University of New Hampshire. After graduation from UNH they moved to a temporary job in Suffield, Conn. Their next stop was at a farm in Nottingham, N.H., where Wallace worked for two years. Wallace next went to work at the UNH creamery. When an opening at the Durham post office became available he took the position.

Evelyn and Wallace had already purchased a small farm in Lee, N.H. This gave Evelyn an opportunity to have horses again and she also opened the Merri-Lee Tack Shop in the early 1960's. She closed the tack shop in 1994, giving up ,when people started buying "on line' looking for bigger stores.

In the 1950's Evelyn became interested in Morgan horses and started owning two mares for breeding and started to show their Morgans at small horse shows. By 1963 they had done well showing and for the next few years moved up to larger shows. Evelyn and Wallace were among the group that in 1966 organized the Granite State Morgan Horse Society. Evelyn was an avid reader and studied pedigrees or Morgan horses and kept a few books on the breed and many magazines. After the closing of the tack shop life slowed up and she began having health problems and the last 15 years have been one thing after another.

With her passing in January she leaves her husband of 71 years.

Her first son, Richard, passed away in 2009. Her second son, Allan, and wife Carole live in Lee; daughter-in-law Donna lives in New Mexico; there are five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
