Ludwik Goscinski Obituary

SOMERSWORTH — Ludwik Chester Goscinski passed away peacefully on Monday, March 21, 2011, after a period of failing health surrounded by his loving family.

"Lou" was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on July 25, 1919. He was the son of Joseph and Lydia Goscinski (Symanski) of Warsaw, Poland. He was a lifelong resident of Dover, having lived at Langdon Place in recent years. He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in Dover.

Lou served his country proudly in World War II and the Korean conflict. He was humbled by his service and was cautious to speak openly about it. Lou was a private in the U.S. Army for three years. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving 17 years and reaching the rank of Chief Boatswain's Mate. Lou served aboard the USS New Jersey and the USS Apache. While aboard the Apache, he was wounded fighting a ship's fire and received commendations for his heroism.

In 1955, while stationed at the Naval Base in Portsmouth, N.H., Lou received a meritorious performance of duty commendation for leading the rescue of the 53-foot schooner "Adventurer" in gale-force winds. He also served for the United Nations and was the "Skipper" of a tugboat while stationed in the Philippines. Lou was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. After his retirement from military service, he worked as a pipe fitter at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Lou was a member of the Dover Lodge of Elks. He loved Polka music, dancing and singing. His hero was Pope John Paul II.

He was known for his preparation of meals associated with his Polish heritage. Over the past few years he appreciated the wonderful care provided to him by the nursing staffs at Langdon Place, Strafford County Dialysis and Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Most of all Lou loved spending time with his six children, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He treasured family events and all the special moments they brought him. All loved his humor and outgoing personality. They will be greatly missed.

Lou leaves behind his daughters, Cheryl Goscinski-Drew and husband, Fredrick Drew of Barrington, Karin Goscinski-Breton, husband, Darrel Breton, son, Logan, of Somersworth, and daughter, Ashley Spence of South Berwick, Debra Goscinski of Dover; three sons, Louis Goscinski, wife, Donna, their three children, James, Marilyn and Anna of Strafford, William Goscinski, wife, Beth, their two children, Amanda and Lukas, of Somersworth, and son, Lawrence Lytle, wife, Rita, their two children, Erica and Brandon of Raleigh, N.C.

Other family members include his great-grandchildren, Grey Lytle, Emma Stietenroth, and Avery Spence; two brothers, Lawrence Goscinski of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Charles Goscinski of Floral Park, N.Y.; and several nephews and nieces.

His parents and two sisters, Helen Goscinski and Lucy Davidson, predeceased him.

Lou also leaves behind Gabrielle Fortier, who had been a companion of his for 28 years and his dear friend, Betty Galt, both of Dover.

Lou's wake will be held at the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home at 655 Central Ave. in Dover. Calling hours will be held Friday, March 25 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A Mass and celebration of Lou's life will be held on Saturday, March 26 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church located at 155 Central Ave. in Dover. Lou's ashes will be placed in the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Lou has requested donations in his name be made to Strafford County Patient's Services Fund at 27 Sterling Drive, Rochester, NH 03867. The funds will be used to support dialysis patients.

Many prayers to the Goscinski family. May God be with each and every one of you, in the days ahead. Lou was certainly smiling down on all of you today, during the wonderful celebration of his life. It was an amazing day of rememberance! I will remember how Lou would shine with pride when he talked about his children and grandchildren, ALWAYS with that infectious smile. Nobody could tell a story, or make you laugh like he could! While being friends with Debbie over the years, I had the pleasure of visiting Lou a few times, and I will treasure those visits for many years to come. Thank you Lou for the laughs, memories, and for my wonderful friend!

Dear Cheryl and Family,
Your Dad was one of those people you meet in life and never forget. I remember coming around the corner of West Concord Street on two wheels, playing the ice cream truck music, and beeping the horn in the Traveling Tales van. Your Dad and Gabe would greet us with a wave and a smile. He loved that I married a Polish boy. Cherish every memory of the moments you shared with him. You are in my thoughts Cheryl.

Conventional wisdom says that your loss is greater than mine & that is probably very true. However,I felt a very special relationship to your dad from the first time I realized I was his baby brother.
I'm guessing he gave you even more of the same love, attention & encouragement that he gave to me.
I'm grateful to have had him as a brother as you must be to have had him as a father. We're lucky to have had him for such a long time.

Uncle Ski-boy, a blast from the past!! I was just a little girl but the times I spent with my cousins, Uncle Ski, Aunt Flo, Aunt Martha, and Uncle Jim, priceless. There were a bunch of us when we all got together. YIKES!!!
I don't have any magic words or advise to comfort my cousins, but we are still family and we always seem to be there for each other, in some way, shape, or form.
A good friend did give me these words and I'll share them and I hope it helps:
"There are things that we don't want to happen but have to accept, things we don't want to know but have to learn, and people we can't live without but have to let go."

Uncle Ski-it's been a long time and when you get to heaven, you'll be in good company. Would you please give Brian a big hug and kiss from me. Have a beer with my dad and Uncle Jim.

I was so very sorry to hear of your loss. Your Dad was such a sweetheart who always had a smile on his face. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time.

March 24, 2011

Ski, as he was so affectionately known to us, was a great man: kind, generous, funny, talkative and caring.
We will always remember how good you were to our children, Justin & Emily and how you were delighted to meet Emily & Rob's little girl, Kylie.
Most memorable, however, is how good you were to our Mom, Gaby. The two of you had many beautiful years together.
Thank you for your kindness over the years, Ski, and we'll see you on the other side.
Please watch over us as you will, no doubt, continue to do for your loving family.

love,

George & Anne Fortier, Jr.
