To Matt's family,
I prayed so much that Matt would make it through this difficult challenge he faced. God had other plans for Matt.
I had the pleasure of seeing him for over 13 yrs at the Gonic Post Office, and I always enjoyed our conversations.
I admired his loyalty and love for his family. Michelle, Taylor and Alexa, I don't have to tell you how much you all meant to him.
Matt was Truly a " special man", and I will miss him so much.
Seeing Matt always made me love and appreciate my job.
What a guy!
He made a huge impact in his 60 yrs of life here on earth.

I cannot believe this. I've known for nearly a week and it's still surreal.
To know how great of a person he was, can only be a small reflection of how great of a parent, spouse and sibling he was to his loved ones.
I only have good memories, and will treasure them always.
Hearts up to Michele, Taylor and Alexa.
Love to you all.

Michele and family,
I have read over 90 memories of Matt and I join them in expressing my sorrow for his passing. What a tribute to a life well lived. I feel privileged that I knew him. He certainly touched my life and I will never forget him.
March 6, 2020
Sad to hear this. I knew Mat back in the 80's. Mostly I remember seeing him all the time at The Works...Racquetball tournaments, working out and my biggest memory was the "Battle of the Stars" competition on his team at The Works and our team won! I remember him at York beach in the Summer all the time playing volleyball and parties through the 80's. He was a very nice guy and I will always remember him this way. I'm sure you are missed by many!! My sincere condolences go out to all of his family and friends. RIP Mat.

Wow, I still can't believe it. I remember when I was real young (before age 10) my oldest brother would drag me around to play basketball & that was the first time I ran into Matt, what a great person & competitor then, he was like 4 years ahead of me in school, so I always looked up to him. Then I remember when I was in Jr. High & seeing him with Scotty J, & still Matt was that calm presence. Then shortly before graduating The Works opened in the late 70's & he was simply one of the best racquetball players I ever knew. I rejoined The Works about ten years ago & there was Matt, still competitive & still one of the nicest people I've ever met & I now had an adult friendship with him. I'm so sorry for his families lost, but let it be known, he touched so many lives positively. RIP Matt!!!

I cant image going to The Works and not see Matts smiling face and upbeat energy!! He is the kindness man I know. Matt gave me the love for racquetball, if it wasnt for him I never would have played. Now I play at least twice a week and have been playing for years. Thank you Matt for your kind friendship! Love and prayers go out to your family! ❤

Ever since I heard of Matt's passing, many great memories keep coming back to the first time I met him when I was fourteen to the ten years following. From relaxing by The Works pool, taking his classes, having a mutual friend group, York Beach and him riding around in his blue convertible etc. What I remember most of all was his kindness; not only to me, but to others as well. Even though the last time I saw Matt was twenty years ago, he was one of those people who no matter how long it had been, you felt like no time had passed. At that time he was able to meet my two little girls, and I was able to hear how happy he was to be a husband to Michelle and to be a dad. Michelle, I haven't seen you since Anne and John W's wedding, but it was wonderful to see that day how Matt had found his wife to be and the happiness you both shared. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your children and both of your families.

My brother, Growing up the youngest I had the opportunity to witness many different personalities in my family. Matt was always the calming force even when we were growing up, from our days of playing basketball for the Rochester boys club, (what a competitor) to the last few days and hours we got to spend with each other, no situation ever seemed to big or difficult he always believed that he would persevere. My friend, Matt was there with advice, if you wanted it. I watched his interactions with people at the Works ( weight room, front desk, etc. Matt was the kind of person that you wanted to be around and if you got that chance, you walked away most likely feeling better about yourself. I realized many years ago my brother was who I wanted to be like, but there is only one Matt. My hero, watching my brother in any sporting event from our time as kids to competing as teammates in a horseshoe tournament ( which we won ) Matt was always the true professional. We share the same competitive gene, My brother just knew how to channel it to a win. I could go on for days, God I love that man! A true Hero isnt measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart ❤

They will do amazing things with their lifes because of the father you were and still will watch over them. RIP Matt, you will be missed by all❤ Becky and Les Burr

I met Matt in the mid 1980's when I took aerobics classes from him at The Works. I saw him on and off for the past 30+ years, and we always stopped to chat with one another. He was always so pleasant and and I appreciated my chats with him. There was something very special about Matt. When we lost our young son, Willis, Matt and I shed a tear together at The Works. He was always enthusiastic, helpful and a great conversationalist as well. Recently (late fall, 2019), I had a lovely talk with him while he was working out at The Works and preparing for his upcoming surgery. I will miss him a lot at the gym. My thoughts at this sad time are with his lovely wife and family, of which he was VERY proud. Thankfully you have one another to lean on during this painful time for your family. How lucky were you all to have him as a son, father, husband, brother, friend or co-worker, etc.? We were all blessed to know him. Good bye, Matt, and thank you for the joy of knowing you.

I still cant believe Mat is gone. At The Works we were calling him superman for how he sailed through chemo and then radiation and heard the good news that his tumor had shrunk more than docs even expected. During this time he would always make a point to come up to the second floor and chat with me in my office.
He was definitely a role model at work for his hard work ethic. Im so heartbroken that we will not see him at The Works. And I am heartbroken for his family. But met you raised some awesome kids and they are strong because of you Im sure!!
Rest In Peace Matt

Matt was always a gracious winner of our racquetball games. After 18 years of being unable to beat him in our matches, (the last 10 years we played twice weekly) he would still let me keep trying. I think we both enjoyed the banter as much as the racquetball. He was indeed a friend. I will miss him for a lot more than just the workouts. My condolences to you, Michele, Taylor and Alexa - you showed true love and devotion to help Matt endure the difficult ups and downs.

I was very saddened upon learning of Matt's passing. It was way too soon. I first knew Matt from The Works in the 1980s (when racquetball ruled) and I was pleased to see him still at the club---looking as youthful as ever---when I rejoined a few years ago. I am so incredibly sad to learn of Matts passing. My heart goes out to the Hussey family. Matt was so kind. He was the Greeter at The Works; I would tease him and call him that as he smiled at me in the mornings and we would both laugh. He was just a great person who made time for you if you needed him. I was very lucky to have seen him in the few months prior to tell him how proud I was of him for coming in even though he may not have been feeling his best. I prayed so hard for him. We all did. My blessings to all of you during this incredibly painful time. Rest peacefully Matt, I will miss seeing your smile at the gym. We all will.

Matt was a kind and gentle man whose unflappable way of defusing situations was his unique ability. This came through in the way the front desk staff at The Works handled guests with a cheerful smile and comment each day. Matt made them all feel important and encouraged them to give their best every day. Matt was also a great coach and teacher of one of his passions... Racquetball... he had a way of helping your game from raw beginner to experienced player. I know that Matt fought this fight like he did any challenge. He put his shoulder down and drove through it. The last time I saw him he was walking with his team at the Seacoast Cancer Center 5K last September. We exchanged greetings... Gave each other a "man hug"... and he looked so darn good... his smile was radiant, color good and the old muscle tone and signature stride was evident. That's how I'll remember him and I'll miss his smile and wave and nod of his head every time I enter The Works. I'm in Florida until the end of the month but I'll have a special thought for him and his family on Friday.

Im so saddened to hear of Matts passing. I worked with Matt for many years at the Works Athletic Club. Matt and I spent many days hanging out at York Beach, Goodnight Ogunquit, and health clubs all over the Seacoast. Matt had an amazing sense of humor and he was a great, great friend. I watched Matt befriend those who were less fortunate (in different ways) and demonstrate great care for others. I lost touch with Matt for many years, but reconnected with him last year. He was so happy and couldnt stop talking about his family. The world is a lot less happy place without Matt. My condolences to his entire family.

To my Father, you were such an amazing human being. You touched so many lives and knew SO many people. You had such compassion to everyone and went out of your way to do the smallest things for anyone. You were the best father a son could imagine. I will take care of mom and lex as you watch over us from up above. Each star I see I think of you, as I used to say when I was a kid looking into the sky for stars I close my eyes, I make a wish. I love you very much, this is going to be very tough but the courage and strength you have taught us will go a long way. You will not be forgotten as we tell stories each day and never stop thinking of your infectious laugh.
I love you Pep,

Matt will be missed by all who knew him. His quick wit and friendship will leave a void in my memories that just cant be replaced. My memories of him will always bring a smile to my face and passing by areas like the tennis courts, York beach and Plymouth State will bring back his memories and a saddened smile to my face. Till we meet again, Matt!
