Paul Martel Obituary

DOVER — Paul J. Martel, Sr., 81, of Upper Factory Road, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, after a stubborn battle with pancreatic cancer, with his family by his side.

Born in Dover, April 10, 1928, he was the son of Wilfred J. and Pauline (Labrie) Martel, and attended Dover Schools and had resided here all of his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict.

In 1968, he founded the successful plumbing and heating company that bears his name, Martel Plumbing and Heating, Inc., which he operated until his retirement in 1992 and where he still worked a few days a week. He gave a start to many of the tradesmen that now serve the area.

A true family patriarch, he always put those closest to him first. He was a great listener who could be counted on for sound advice, but always preferred to teach and to lead by example, he loved his family. Never one to be cooped up inside, he loved to be outdoors, especially the North Country of his native New Hampshire. With his sons and brothers he built and owned camps in both Pittsburg and Dummer. He loved to go camping in the White Mountains, it didn't matter if it were a tent or an RV as long as there was a campfire and family and friends to share it with. In the winter, he could be found snowmobiling through the woods and across frozen lakes, always in the lead.

He was a gentleman farmer with a great love of animals. As the owner of successful show horses he enjoyed attending competitions with his youngest daughter, Kris. He was an avid collector of die cast cars. He enjoyed doing projects with wood, loved country and western music, road trips with his brothers, and traveled extensively to places like Germany, Ireland, Hawaii, Holland and London.

With an active mind he was a builder and problem solver at heart who always had multiple projects in the works and the God-given talent to complete them.

A devoted husband of 55 years, who had found his one true love, he is survived by his wife, Katherine (Hughes) Martel; two sons, Paul J. Martel, Jr., Peter L. Martel and wife, Leslie; two daughters, Lynda J. Robidas and husband, Ed, and Kristine E. Chagnon and husband, Mike, all of Dover; nine grandchildren, Lyndsay Martel and fiance, Frank Salantri, Zak Robidas and girlfriend, Kendra Riordan, Sadie Martel and boyfriend, Matt French, Laci Robidas, Seth Martel, Sydney Martel, Noah Chagnon, Olivia Chagnon and Anna Chagnon, and two great-grandchildren, Jaiden Robidas and Ava French. He also leaves four brothers, Robert Martel and wife, Yvonne, of Dover, Emile Martel and wife, Ruth, of Barrington, Richard Martel and wife, Susan, of Strafford, and Bert Martel and wife, Louise, of Somersworth; three sisters, Pauline Lemieux and husband, Jerry, of Nashua, Theresa Hartford and husband, Gerry, of Somersworth, and Rita Chase of Dover, and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond and Wilfred "Pete" Martel.

There are no calling hours. Friends are invited to a graveside service Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 1 p.m. at St. Mary Cemetery, Dover Point Road.

Memorials in his name may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9956, Multiple Sclerosis Society, 1361 Elm Street, Suite 106, Manchester, NH 03101 or Wentworth Homecare & Hospice, 113 New Rochester Road, Dover, NH 03820.

November 30, 2009

On behalf of our family Yvonne and I would like to extend our condolences to Pauls family, We grieve with you, Paul will be missed by everyone who knew him,
Thank you Kay for the care you gave my Brother during those difficult times keeping him at home is something he wanted so very much, You were the best,
Thank you also to his Family for being at your parents---Mem and Peps side around the clock those last few days you made them proud you're Dad didn't speak much those last hours but he knew you were there,
I have many fond memories of growing up in a family of ten childre Paul was the third of seven Sons myself the fourth he was like a guiding light to me always there when I needed help or a shoulder to lean on I was overwelmed the day he asked me to be best man when he married Kay the Love of his Life,
I spent many enjoyable weekends with family and friends at Pauls camp on Indian Stream in the Town of Pittsburg, Snowmobiling, hunting, and my favorite weekends in the fall cutting firewood for the winter months ahead,
I recall a picture Paul had in his living room many years ago of a home in a country setting with a phrase at the bottom that read, Let me live in a home by the side of the road and be a friend to man,
You've lived up to that phrase Brother and then some you were a friend to everyone you met, you,ve been an insperation to me, you were my hero,my idol, and my best friend, Life won't be quite the same without you,We may have lost you but you've left us with enough memories to last a lifetime
God Speed Brother, I Love You

November 20, 2009

Paul,
You were my friend, my boss, my next door neighbor, my father-in-law, and my second dad. As a friend you were always a great listener whose advice I could be assured came from the heart. As my boss you gave me my first full time job. You encouraged me to broaden my horizons and always learn more even though it meant I’d eventually leave the company you founded and ran so successfully. As my next door neighbor you were always there to help with a project, loan a tool, or just walk the property line and chat about our big ideas. As my Father-in-law words can’t even begin to express how welcome you made me feel in your family, you must have been rolling your eyes when I came into your daughters life. As my second dad you lead by example, were never judgmental, and supported all my crazy plans even when you didn’t agree. I first met you when I was seventeen and knew everything; I can honestly say I wouldn’t be who I am today had I never met you. You had such a positive impact on so many lives, I’m so proud to have known you these last 24 years, rest assured you are alive and well in my memories.

To Pete and family,
Sorry to hear about your dad. May your memories of happier times get you through this time of sadness.

November 17, 2009

As time goes on we all seem to go our separate ways/living our lives, but memories of our childhood will always be clear. How lucky we were to grow up on Tolend Rd with such wonderful families, the Martel family being one of them. I will always remember the time spent at your house, it was like a second home/family to me. How fortunate I was to be included in the fun as you welcomed me to join your family in attending Red Sox games, and let’s not forget the snowmobile trips, one very vivid memory was Pittsburgh, (the out-house) that was scary, and cold. Our visits of late were far and few in between, but I am so glad I had the opportunity to recently spend time visiting you, reminiscing about the past brings back so many wonderful memories. I will never forget you Mr. Martel.

P.S. sorry about all the loud sleepovers!

Love you always,

Dad - I don't even know where to begin. All I know is that I could not have asked for a better Dad...I am blessed. Although I never said it out loud, and now wished I had, I always considered you my biggest hero. I could always count on you for guidance and security. You were the first I'd go too if I needed advice and you were always there to listen. I so fondly remember Saturday trips to McDonald's (and you'd always send me in because you didn't like talking at the drive thru!), you always buying me my favorite, a maple square, at Dunkin Donuts, riding around with you on the back of the Cub Cadet while you mowed the lawn on Tolend Rd., all the snowmobile excursions, trips to both camps, camping, always finding "space" for me in the company...but the one thing I am so grateful for is that I got to share my love of horses with you. All the years of horse shows we had...I can't tell you how appreciative I am for all that, how lucky was I to have had that opportunity thanks to you and Mom. To this day I so miss hanging out with you in the barn. Words cannot express how thankful I am to have had you for my Dad. Paul said it best when he said you were the "ultimate father". There are no words to describe what you meant, and still mean, to all of us. I don't know what we will do without you. I love you Dad, and miss you so much already. Don't worry about Mom, she is in good hands. Say Hi to Seamus for us - Love your youngest, Kris

God's fingers touch'd him, and he slept.
- Tennyson

To old friends, well loved.

I am very saddened to hear Mr. Martel has passed from us. I will remember him with smiles and prayers for him and for those he loved best - his own ones.

I will always remember his quiet, gentle strength and that broad, happy smile of his.

It is rightly said that 'all men die....not all men really live.' Paul Martel really lived and he lived well.

Words seem so inadequate at such times. When I think of the great childhood I lived and the life beyond it God has allowed me, I shall remember many great kings and queens... men and women who loved me and guarded me. Mr. Paul Martel was one of these - a great and loving king.

May God keep you always.

Pep,
Mere words could never truly serve a man like you any justice. You were the ultimate patriarch and the consummate gentleman. You always put our family first, even at the very end. Though it was by far the hardest thing I have ever done, I’m am truly grateful that I was able to be there and help you make it on your last "camping trip".
You have taught me so much, including the most basic of things, how to paint a fence, hammer a nail, or start a campfire. You have also taught me the meaning of humility and loyalty, kindness and love.
Some of the things I will always remember include our early mornings out in the barn, our Saturday morning trips to Duston’s for a maple round, our “just because” cakes, going outside at night to look at the stars, and of course, our years of camping and snowmobiling. I know you are gone from this world, but one thing that will never leave me is my admiration for such an incredible man, who loved and was loved more than anyone I have ever known.
We never had the chance to make you your seafood dinner once you got home from the hospital, but like Frank said last night, you can eat all the mussels you want in Heaven.
I love you and miss you already. Please, rest in peace knowing that we will take care of Mem and each other.
Love,
Lyndsay
