R. Adams Obituary

R. Terry Adams

KITTERY POINT, MAINE - Lt. Cmdr. R. Terry Adams (U.S. Navy Retired), 66, passed away on April 7, 2014 at his seaside home in Kittery Point, Maine after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer. He passed away peacefully surrounded by both friends and family. Terry was born on March 2, 1948 in Dover, and spent his early years in Maine and New Hampshire, eventually moving to Laconia, where he was a star football player for Laconia HS Class of '66. After a postgraduate year at Culver Military Academy, Terry was recruited to play football for Dartmouth College. While there, Terry became one of Dartmouth's finest rowers. After college, Terry continued to row for the Potomac Boat Club in Washington, DC. Terry competed at the national and international level. His rowing successes included the Head of the Charles, being the first American oarsman to win the pair race at the Henley Royal Regatta in England, competing on the US Rowing Team at the Pan Am Games and World Championships and securing a spot on the '76 US Olympic Team. Terry was inducted into the Dartmouth Hall of Fame in 1984. After rowing, Terry applied equal focus and energy to education and business and had a successful career in corporate communications and investor relations with a number of companies including Superior Oil/Farming, DSC Communications and Sycamore Networks. During his career, Terry also received an MiF from UC Bakersfield as well as an MBA from George Washington University. Beyond work, Terry was always looking forward to the next trip and was an avid international traveler. Terry was preceded in death by his mother Jacqueline Warren Adams. He is survived by his father, Lyle Adams and step-mother, Irene Adams, both of Leesburg, Florida, his loving children, Ben Adams of Monte Sereno, California and Catherine Adams, of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, his five beautiful granddaughters and his children's wonderfully supportive spouses, Elizabeth Adams and Ben Blouin. Terry cherished the many dear friends he leaves behind, both near and far.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. on August 8, 2014 at St. Peter's by the Sea in Cape Neddick, Maine. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to support one of Terry's passions, the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad located at 58 Fore Street, Portland, Maine 04101. He would also appreciate it if you only buy dark green cars from this day forward. Care for the Adams family has been entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
