Roy Worthen Obituary

DURHAM ; Roy E. Worthen, 90, of Durham, died Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Kirkwood Corners, Lee, after a long illness.

Born Jan. 13, 1919, in Plymouth, he was the son of Leon and Ida (Smith) Worthen. He was raised in Plymouth and served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was stationed on a rocket ship, and was involved in the Invasion of Normandy.

Roy was a 1943 graduate of the University of New Hampshire.

For many years he was employed at Manchester Federal Savings, retiring as an assistant vice president in 1979.

He loved boating and enjoyed many days with his family at his vacation property on Lake Winnipesaukee.

Roy was a member of the First Parish Church, Dover, the Robert G. Durgin American Legion Post 67 & Rising Star Lodge 47, both in Newmarket. He served as a trustee and treasurer of the board of 4-H.

In 1946, he married his first wife, Edith Phair of Durham. She died in 1986. They had two sons, William and Douglas.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Dr. Eugene Worthen of Concord in 1979 and John Worthen of Lee in 2007.

Roy met his present wife, Roseann Keane Worthen, while on a day trip to the Museum of Science. They married in December 1990.

He is survived by his wife, Roseann (Kuper) Keane Worthen of Durham; two sons, William Worthen and his wife, Penny Burns of Springfield, Va., and Douglas Worthen of Carbondale, Ill.; a grandson, Benjamin Worthen of Bloomington, Ind.; two nieces and two nephews. Also surviving are his stepdaughter, Tricia King and her husband, David, of Wilton, Conn., and their daughters, Elizabeth and Victoria King, both of Manhattan, N.Y.; stepsons, Brian Keane of Manhattan, N.Y., and Frederick Keane and his wife, Shelley Walker Keane and their son, Andrew of Kent, N.Y.; and brother-in-law, Walter C. Kuper of Durham.

Roy's family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Kirkwood Corners for all they have done while he resided there.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, March 16, at 11 a.m. at First Parish Church, Dover. Private graveside services will be held at Lee Hill Cemetery, Lee.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Parish Church, Building Fund, 218 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820 or Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Please accept our condolences, Doug, on your great loss. Your mom was a favortie teacher, and I remember your dad as larger than life itself. I didn't know his life story until now. He must have been so proud of you, and of Ben. You and your family will be in our prayers.

i waited on Mr. Worthen for many years while working at Durham Copy. He was a delightful customer and I was always happy to see him come through our door. I know he will be deeply missed by family and friends.
